Unlike any other commercial undertaking, banks are allowed to take their charges from our accounts without submitting a bill first, so we have no opportunity to dispute the bill ( Today's score: bankers two, public nil , 26 November). It is now impossible to live without a bank account, so we have no choice but to put our money in their hands. The fact that they can decide for themselves how much...

For the second day in a row I went out birdwatching, as the forecast for today was more promising. Off I went to Oare Marshes near Faversham . As soon as I arrived it started raining! Not a catastrophe, as the good thing about Oare is the birds are visible from the car. There were lots of Lapwings and quite a few ducks to keep me amused. After a while it started to brighten up and I hadn't been out...

C I had the privilege of persuading the brilliant Artist, Charles Evans, to come to Kent to paint the beautiful towns of Faversham and Margate. These are to be two episodes of a series, filmed across England. The series called 'Brush up your History ' will be shown on Discovery in January. As well as showing budding Artists tips and techniques to improve their painting skills, Charles visits local...

Not just apples: pears, quince and medlars too Ted Hobday stands among the medlars and the quince, leads us up through the pears, past the Black Worcester and the Belles des Arbres, the Conference and the Winter Orange. This is Brogdale Farm, near Faversham in Kent, home to the National Fruit Collections, the largest collection of fruit...

I took this shot about three years ago, it is a Trumpeter Finch, all the way from Africa, it was taken at Tankerton , Whitstable, on the North Kent Coast, three years ago, only two have ever made it to the UK, to get the shot I was using a 400mm zoom lens the distance at least 75 yds, I would add that some birders were less than concerned for the birds welfare and to my mind were tantamount to harassing...

If you have twenty minutes or so spare over the next week, I can recommend the Radio Four, Food Programme from last Sunday which covered the English hop renaissance : English hops are enjoying a renaissance thanks to new varieties, greater demand for 'hoppy' ales and the incredible growth in micro breweries. Sheila Dillon enjoys some of the heady aromas and samples some new ales. She visits Shepherd...

Two weeks ago I ran the Faversham 10k this felt like a comeback run as my last race was the Cliffe Woods 10k which took place in July - that seems a long time ago! This race wasn't described a "flat" but I wasn't expecting it to be as undulating as it was. Anyway the race took in the very lovely kent villages of Brogdale , Whitehill, Painters Forstal and Ospring, not that I noticed as I struggled...

I am shocked at the idea of weeding out "pointless studies" ( Report , 23 September). Napoleon insisted that academic research in France be geared to the value of the state, and German 19th-century science flourished in a much more enlightened environment, and provided a large number of practical applications for supposedly "pure" research. Oxford and Cambridge professor GH Hardy...

Adult summer Tufted Puffin, The Swale off Oare Marshes NR, North Kent, 16 September 2009 (Murray Wright) Oare Marshes regular Murray Wright had to do a double take this morning when he came face to face with a very odd-looking seabird which he eventually worked out was a TUFTED PUFFIN (Lunda cirrhata). Murray had been seawatching from the sea wall hide 450 yards east of the end of the Oare Marshes...
