The picture above is of a bulge in the concrete block work of the cliff façade above the Pleasurama site, the crack has appeared recently i.e. since it was painted. I would ask you to consider the pressure of the weight of the chalk behind needed to crack concrete blocks. You can also see clearly where the whole of the block work infill has been pushed out relative to the adjacent buttress....

It really is a rotten day weather wise here in Kent. Wind howling and heavy bursts of rain. Hubby just taken the kids to the cinema so I'm staying put and gonna hopefully catch up with some of your blogs. This is my new Madlynn from the GF that I received the other day. Not had a lot of crafting time this week, my tennis elbow is easing but not back to 100% just yet. I have coloured her with Copics...

More apples are grown here than anywhere else in the country. Not just apples: pears, quince and medlars too Ted Hobday stands among the medlars and the quince, leads us up through the pears, past the Black Worcester and the Belles des Arbres, the Conference and the Winter Orange. This is Brogdale Farm, near Faversham in Kent, home to the National Fruit Collections, the largest collection of fruit...

That was the word that sprang to mind during this morning's run...primordial! The day started early with a car journey to Knowle Park, Sevenoaks, Kent an area of outstanding beauty our objective for the morning was to join the Greensand Way and follow it through the wealds of Kent to have a look at the beautiful autumnal colours and also to take on a ve ry tough run over the undulating paths and bye-ways...

It is the half term holidays and the local wildlife organisations have put on Kent Coastal Week, with loads of seashore based events across the county. Today, one of them was a fossil foray at The Warren, which Ulrike, Will and I attended.......and another sixty odd parents and their offspring. Now, this could have been very irritating, but instead, I found the sight of so many families out of doors...

Unlikely homecoming venue cannot wipe smile from F1's new champion There was a distinct, low-throttle burn of expectation in the air around Bluewater shopping centre thismorning. At the beginning of the Formula One season Jenson Button can scarcely have expected to seal the world title in Sao Paulo, as he did on Sunday, with one race of the championship still to go. But only in his wildest imagination...

I made a mistake when I sent off today's review for Andrew Allen at Short of the Week . He's already posted a review from Jason Sondhi here when I was on my hols. I do remember it at the time as he mentioned Babelgum somewhat disparagingly but I never saw the video until I referred to it here a day or so ago. Last week at the UK Music Video Awards Strawberry Swing gained an impressive three category...

Last Saturday myself plus a few CAMRA colleagues visited a part of the West Kent branch area that we don't normally get out to. We caught the 297 bus out from Tunbridge Wells, alighting in the village of Brenchley. From here it was a short pleasant walk to the tiny hamlet of Castle Hill. On the way we were rewarded with some spectacular views across the Weald towards the Greensand Ridge. Everything...

The chalk may have started to fade, but the year is just beginning for the Greeks of Kent State. Sorority recruitment kicks off tonight and fraternity recruiting efforts span throughout September. "I don't think people realize the work that goes into [recruitment]," said Joanna Jones, vice president of membership and retention at Delta Zeta.

Flint occurs where there's chalk. And nowhere was it used to greater effect than in Norfolk, where the absence of other building stone or suitable timber could be found. This is one of the very hardest of minerals, composed of almost 100% silica. Usually we will see flint knocked into smaller units (knapping) and used as outer decoration on buildings. It could be mined, as at Grimes Graves near Thetford,...

Sussex at its loveliest, Kent at its proudest, Labour at its lowest: all's right with the world I love days like this: the clean air, the gentle sun, the back-to-school smell on the breeze. September is when the English Channel is at its warmest, and I frolicked in the waves for over an hour this morning, reluctant to face the relative chill of the air. A wonderful thing, the Channel. It serves us,...

Folkestone Warren is the only place to find grayling butterflies in Kent, so on a suitably hot day I went in pursuit. It's a large area to cover, but the most likely area was covered first, and provided a great number of butterflies...but no graylings . The parched hillside was Mediterranean in the heat, with perfumes of herbs swirling all around. There were plenty of walls , and other notables included...
