Scuba diving to the depths of human history

KITTED out with the latest scuba gear, Garry Momber peers through the murky water to the seabed below. It's dark - Momber is 11 metres below the water's surface and the black peat of the seabed absorbs what little light reaches the bottom. Then the tide turns, and as clearer water flows in from the open seas, the decaying remains of an ancient forest emerge from the gloom. Working quickly, he records...

Isle of Wight

A little break last week amidst the anxiety of C being in hospital. We had chosen a hotel on the seafront at Sandown and had a balcony room. It was lovely to wake to the waves gently rushing forwards and to the sunrise over the sea. We pretty much covered most of the island in travel apart from Yarmouth area and Newport. My favourite village was Godshill - a kind of grockley Miss Marple place. And...

Sailing Fund Raising

More local news from in and around the Solent area from Dibben and Dibben as Cruising and racing yachtsmen and their crews from the Royal Southampton Yacht Club are planning to sail across the Solent this weekend for supper in Yarmouth . . . and anticipate raising at least £1,500 for the RNLI along the way. The race-cum-rally on Saturday starts in the central Solent and is expected to take three...

Isle of Wight Day Trip

Isle of Wight Day Trip This post is going out at 10.00am and hopefully a 2nd part will follow later this afternoon on Press. Yesterday I went with a friend to the Isle of Wight. We went first to see the last slam door electric stock operating the Lymington Yarmouth Branch. This stock is to be totally withdrawn soon. We took the opportunity to make the crossings of the Solent by two routes and compare...

Round The Island - without the other 1,778 yachts

The annual "Round The Island" race, Isle of Wight that is, was held on 20 June this year, see link: http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk/web/code/php/main_c.php?map=rir09&ui=rir2&style=std&override=&section=home&page=home I have had an ambition since I acquired Misty to sail her round the course non-stop solo which in straight lines in just over 50nm. I have previously sailed...

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight

Sean and I have just spent a week at the Old Mill in Yarmouth, Isle of Wight. We were joined by Sean's son Anselm, and the Elwes family. Yarmouth is a pretty, twee little town where most people don't bother to lock their doors. Sean and I visited the Tiger and Lemur sanctuary, and I enjoyed that a lot. I took pictures of the Tigers because "The Tiger who came to Tea" is Wendy's favourite...

I am trying to locate a contact for the Old Mill - I stayed there with friends several times about 10 years ago and none of us have contact details anymore...

Gribble

Feared by sailors and pirates alike, the Gribble is apparently any one of 56 varieties of a marine isopod . The nasty little creature bores into wood to ingest as food, unfortunately all too often the Gribble's dinner was the planking or keel of a wooden boat. This amusing statue, come seat has been a feature along the harbor side at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight for a couple of years and always makes...

Holiday: Isle of Wight

I recently went to the Isle of Wight on holiday, and while there went on two bike trails which I recorded using the "Trails" iPhone application (see below). I am planning on posting a review of Trails versus Every Trail shortly. Isle Of Wight - Yarmouth to Freshwater (Route 1) Widget powered by EveryTrail: GPS Community Isle [...]

News from the island: 2

The Middle East, the credit crunch... there's no shortage of bad news. Fortunately the news from the Isle of Wight is rather more comforting: Town councillors have given the green light to demolish Yarmouth's public toilets at Bridge Road and replace them with new ones. Fire crews put out a small fire in the bedroom of a Ryde flat on Sunday. Two pumps, police and ambulance crews went to the property....
