a new opinion in UK / Ireland Guide about The Spyglass Inn (Ventnor)

a new opinion on www.dooyoo.co.uk about The Spyglass Inn (Ventnor) written by JJJJ As a coastal town which relies heavily on the tourist industry, Ventnor on the Isle of Wight has its fair share of pubs and restaurants. Whilst some of these eateries produce a top quality dining experience, others fall into the realms of ...

A fitting place for a crime

I visited Ventnor Library today, and for those of you who have no idea where Ventnor is it’s on the beautiful Isle of Wight (IOW), which is situated across the Solent from Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, where Inspector Horton of my marine mystery crime novels does his best to catch villains and make the streets a safer place for law abiding citizens. And no, there wasn't a body in the library,...

Rock band Ash to tour A to Z

So, Aldershot does not have the glitter of Los Angeles, or the rock'n'roll heritage of Liverpool and London. What it does have going for it, as far as the rock band Ash were concerned tonight was that its name begins with A, making it a perfect location for the first gig of an eccentric A-Z tour of Britain. Though the band has sold millions of albums worldwide and can fill big venues in much larger...

Observations on Isle Of Wight 'Logic'

My apologies for getting nowhere near here this week. I should have had the time, I could have had the time, its just that due to the sleek organisation and brilliant logic of our bus operator Southern Vectis I have found myself spending whole death inducing hours stood in fields in the arse end of the back of beyond. My blood preasure, already somewhere in the stratosphere from spending 3 weeks training...

The Hambrough, The Isle of Wight - Review

The Hambrough sums up what the new Isle of Wight is all about. There are still old-fashioned seaside towns and no shortage of quaint tearooms but the island is changing and with it, the people it is attracting. Good food, sandy beaches, long walks and ubiquitous greenery, are all there – a mere three hours from London. After refurbishing an old hotel in the pretty seaside town of Ventnor, in...

Darwin Today exhibition on tour

Guest review by Rowan Adams Fancy something educational and worthy? Or would you prefer fun and silly, or thought-provoking and stimulating? The Darwin Today exhibition touring the country offers a bit of all of the above. Like the Ranger himself, I live on the Isle of Wight, so I went to see the exhibition at the jewel in the Island's crown, Ventnor Botanic Garden. For any Naturenet readers who live...

Deadly seaweed chokes Solent waterways

Farm runoffs and sewage outflows boost growth and puts birds and marine life at risk Blooms of seaweed choking the waterways of the Solent have been caused by large amounts of untreated sewage and farm fertilisers dumped into the sea, according to the Environment Agency . Extra nutrients in the pollutants combined with sunny weather has enabled the seaweed to grow out of control around Worthing in...

Interesting Stout face off

This is the first time I have had a beer from the Basque region of Spain. This Pagoa Zunbeltz is a stout no less. It is dark ruby with just a hint of light showing around the edges. It smells mild and chocolaty and reminds me a little of Murphy's except perhaps a little more bitter. It is also fairly carbonated and a little fizzy for a stout but that does not bother me. There are obvious hints of chocolate...

Letters: Eco Island falls short

Thanks must go to Guardian reporters who have highlighted the problems on the Isle of Wight with the forthcoming closure of the Vestas wind turbine construction facility at Newport ( Vestas dispute , 25 July). Although the Isle of Wight council launched its Eco Island policy amid great publicity nearly two years ago, there is not a single commercial turbine on the Isle of Wight, except for a small...

Frances Doherty - Life Cycle Sculpture Trail

Ventnor Botanic Gardens, IOW.Two years ago at the Brighton Art Fair, Brighton artist Frances Doherty met a gallery owner from Ventnor in the Isle of Wight who thought her seedpod sculptures would be just right to show in the Botanic Gardens on the Island. Frances had always wanted to show her work in situ so jumped at the opportunity and spent the next six to eight months visiting the gardens,

Why isn't the crab pasty our national dish?

If you're heading to the British seaside in the next few weeks, you may find yourself converted to the crab pasty cause If you followed last week's post on crab damaging , you're probably staring at something that looks like the aftermath of Lt Ripley's meeting with a facehugger and saying to yourself, OK, what next? Well, I promised you a couple of suggestions for crabmeat but this one is a little...

1745 Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Olivio

I have been to Sandown on the Isle of Wight three times in my life before last week. The first occasion was in the later 1940’s when the family took its first holiday at a caravan on a farm close to Bembridge Village and a walk from the Bembridge Rocky Ledge. We would take a bus to arrive midday for a picnic lunch when the weather was fine. We went again the next year or a year soon after because...

1744 The Isle of Wight journey and accommodation

Writing about my trip to the Isle of Wight out of sequence is proving a challenge because there are so many other things I need to do during this early part of new week so I have decided to abandon catch up and go with the flow. In my childhood my birth mother had arranged two summer holidays of two weeks on the Isle of Wight. The first has been disappointing because of the location, a caravan on a...
