On this day in 1982, t he notorious East End gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray (pictured) were allowed out of prison for their mother's funeral. Violet Kray, 72, died of cancer the previous week. It was the first time the Kray's, 49, had been seen in public since being sentenced to life imprisonment for murder in 1969. Security was tight for the funeral service in east London. PATRICK ‘DUTCHY’ Holland, the career criminal named in court as the man who shot crime journalist Veronica Guerin, has died in a British jail aged 70.The Dubliner and former US marine was found dead at 6am yesterday in his cell in Parkhurst prison, Isle of Wight.

Chief inspector of prisons Anne Owers reports having found "substantial shortcomings" at Parkhurst Prison on the Isle of Wight, including a disabled prisoner unable to shower for 6 months because staff had not been 'trained' to push his wheelchair and another disabled prisoner unable to wash for a year because staff would not carry him to the showers.
