The “hangers” are alight. It’s as if Bonfire Night has come a week early to the steep wooded scarps that run between Alton and Petersfield. Hampshire, England - not New Hampshire, New England, mind - on one of the very last days of October, and the autumn colours are proving every inch a match for those of the vaunted American fall.

The last time I saw a strain gauge was on the outside of a 200-year old building in Alton, Hampshire where I used to live. The building was old enough to warrant a few cracks but although a gauge was fitted, I never noticed any movement over the years I lived there. It's a different story in the gents' loos at the office though - we recently had a new heater fitted and a large floor-to-ceiling crack...
