Anti-social teenagers: a brave councillor speaks out

It is not the normal practice of this blog to leap to the defence of Conservative politicians under fire from the media, as they usually deserve it. But this is different. The matter concerns one Cllr Jim Hothersall (Con), a member of South Ribble Borough Council, and also mayor of the town of Penwortham, nr. Preston, Lancashire. Regarding the local [...]

Torrential downpours are expected to deluge parts of north and west Britain in the next two days, adding scores of flood alerts to the 45 warnings already in place. More than a month's rain is forecast to fall in the next 48 hours on high ground in Cumbria, where a swath of red on Met Office flood maps – meaning "take action" – is likely to stay put until Saturday morning. Emergency...

Print and Sculpture in Exhibition

Recently I submitted a couple of woodblock prints and a sculpture for selection in the first Ribble Valley Open Exhibition. The exhibition is open to all artists of any media, the only criteria being that the artist be resident in the Ribble Valley area. (You'd be surprised how many there are!) I received notification about a month ago that one of my prints, 'Ribble Valley Winter View' , which some...

Well travelled Black-tailed Godwit

Last weekend at Marshside I spotted a Blackwit on the Junction Pool which had been ringed. The bird was ringed by Pete Potts near Hauganes (Iceland) in July 2005 - since then it's clocked up a fair few air miles, mainly in the NW but with one or two diversions! xxx 13.07.05 Ytri Vik Road 82 south of Dalvik, near Hauganes 14.04.06 Newton Marsh, Preston, Lancashire, NW England 16.04.06 Newton Marsh,...

LANCS: Lanky's still about.

The Ribble Estuary Great White Egret was relocated on Hesketh Out Marsh by Graham Clarkson today so I thought I'd pop along and see if I could get some closer views. Great White Egret, Banks Marsh 17 September 2009. It wasn't always like this! Viewing from the public footpath overlooking Hesketh Out Marsh I could see at least 4 Little Egrets but no sign of GWE. News that the big white one had returned...

LANCS: The Ribble Big White One falls at last!

What is it about Great White Egrets ? Whopping great big white birds with a huge yellow dagger of a bill - no problem, should stick out a mile...... Why have I looked so many times on the Ribble Estuary without joy? This morning was my first opportunity to look for a GWE, first seen on Saturday morning so I set out early to beat the local school traffic, stopping at various spots on the estuary's south...

A SECOND East Lancashire borough is in the grip of plummeting taxi fares after rival operators slashed prices.
