Penrith

Penrith is a market town in Cumbria on the M6. Many people pass the town on their way between England and Scotland or the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. There’s a castle ruin, an unusual Church and loads of tearooms and pubs. If you’re looking for internet access, you can use a cafe on Devonshire [...]

New Kid on the Block

Hi everyone, my name's Cain Scrimgeour and the latest addition to the Young Birder Blog. I'm 18 years old, and from Whitley Bay. I've been birding properly for 6 years now, although I always had a passion for the outdoors, wildlife with birds being my main interest. I've been lucky to have been blessed with the outdoor, nature loving, wild gene which a hand full of us share in these modern times. I've...

Letters: Cleaning up MPs' expenses

References to Gordon Brown's "lavish claims" and "ten thousand quid's worth of cleaning" ( Simon Hoggart's sketch , 13 October) are silly and unfair. Your front-page report ( PM ordered to repay £12,000 of expenses , 13 October) describes the £10,716.60 as claimed over a five-year period. That is less than £179 per month. This is not a "lavish claim"...

Cumbria Cross Country League –Race 1, Cockermouth, Saturday 3rd October

With the fixtures clash of the Ian Hodgson Mountain Relay taking place the following day, there was a lower attendance at the first meeting of the 2009 Cumbria Cross Country League series at Cockermouth on Saturday. With some strong performances Keswick AC took both the mens and ladies team prizes in the 2008 series, and this year sees the inaugural Keswick AC Club Cross Country Championship based...

Back From Scotland

Didn't get back in last night until 23:30, but considering I was still up in Perth just before 17:00 that's not bad going. When you consider I had to drop salmon magnet and north west BNP organiser, Clive Jefferson back in West Cumbria such a trip could only have been achieved by engaging warp drive at Penrith. Consequently, my fuel efficiency was poor knocking my average for the whole adventure down...

Under-Rehearsed & Over-Heated

Solo Sunday 30th August. The Cumbria Guitar Show. I’ve played every year at this guitar show for a decade now, and possibly a bit longer. It was seven years ago when Rick Kemp just happened to walk in during my set, an event that resulted in that historic landmark in the world of folk-rock, the merging of Steeleye Span with myself. Well, in our house it’s an historic landmark. Just before...

Editing Monstrous Mammoths

On Friday I drove up to Cumbria to visit the wonderful Hunter Hill School at Penrith. It was great meeting everyone there, especially as they were all so keen and enthusiastic about books, reading and writing - there were some excellent poets and writers there. On the way home, I called in at Lancaster University to drop some things off for Rachel and have a quick chat - then drove home in time for...

That Was One Hell of a Week That Was Part One

So this was the beginning of a week that would test my powers of endurance, the suspension of my new car and the limits of my bank balance. It all began so innocently! I have a very dear old friend called Andy Blundell who I know from way back when we were pub buddies back in deepest darkest Essex and The Hoop Pub in Stock near Billericay. I had not seen Andy since 1997 but somehow we had just about...
