With Cumbria suffering in the last few days from the heaviest English rainfall in recorded history, and with thousands made homeless by flooding, it came as a spark of brightness when my Natural England colleague Rob phoned me to say that a Rosy (Rose-coloured) Starling had turned up in his garden near Kendal. Rob emailed this picture he captured of a juvenile Rosy Starling in his garden to tempt me,...

Do I detect a certain regret that Tony Blair failed in his bid to become president of the European council ( Comment , Leaders , 20 November)? Is there a single person left in this country who does not share in the shame of the deceit over Iraq? Anthony Marrian London • It is a major missed opportunity for the future prosperity, and indeed safety, of Europe that Tony Blair has been deemed too...

Just a quick post to thank everyone for their concerned queries during this weather event in Cumbria . I am safe and sound, on high ground, with enough provisions to see me through to the middle of next week, so I have no need to venture out at all. This is the road to Hawkshead , my nearest village about a mile away, which is only passable if you have a Land Rover (and then, it comes up over the bonnet!)....

Well, greetings from week 2 in the Lake District. The picture is of my 'office'. How's the weather with you? I only ask because on Monday night I was talking at Carlisle Writers group and it took me nearly two hours to do the 60 miles through wind, rain and hail. It was worth it though because they were a friendly bunch and we had a good laugh. On Tuesday and Wednesday the Met Office have said that...

Yesterday was spent up in Cumbria with our good friend Paul and his menagerie. We called in at Sizergh Catle car park en route to Burneside (above Kendal) in order to see if we could get a glimpse of the resident Hawfinches. There were plenty of birds in the car park - a large flock of Redwing with Fieldfare, Blackbirds, Mistle and Song Thrushes were very much in evidence. There were plenty of Chaffinches...

It’s hard to believe that in a few weeks time I will have lived here for seven years. For I made the move from Exmouth in December 2002. When you consider that I had lived the previous 51 years, all but nine months when I was in Kent, in Exmouth, it was quite a change for me, but one that I have never really regretted. I had been thinking about moving here for some time, but typically me, being...
