Even at the best of times, it is hard to predict the future. To forecast an unprecedented flood is harder still, and to protect effectively against such a flood hardest of all. Yet the serious flood damage in Cockermouth and other parts of Cumbria over the past few days ought nevertheless to be a wake-up call to Britain. We could be much better at calculating flood risk than we are and we should give...

Following the collapse of six bridges in Cumbria, how worried should we be about the strength of others spanning our rivers? When Workington's Northside bridge, the Victorian stone structure that used to span the River Derwent in Cumbria, had its routine check in July last year, no reason was found to suppose it wouldn't last another 100 years. Then came last week's extraordinary torrent through the...

The weather gods seem to have it in for comics conventions. Hi-Ex is already infamous for its snow while this year, despite the rains that brought misery to Cumbria, Leeds was dry on the morning of Saturday 21 November but foggy – very foggy. The road layout in the centre of Leeds is, shall we say, challenging for non-locals but fortunately Saviles Hall is opposite the Royal Armouries museum...

Hadrian’s Wall – all 84 miles of it – will be bathed in light for one night only in March. A spectacular line of light will run along the entire coast-to-coast Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail on Saturday, March 13. Lights will be placed at 250m intervals along the route – that’s around 500 illuminated spots stretching from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria....

I had a go at making a trestle to support the P1 panel in the correct position without having to attach the coaming. The trestle sits on the fuselage floor and can be moved forward and aft slightly, to allow for easier access to the rear of the instrument panels. I'm more of a metal basher than a woodworker, so the end result, whilst functional isn't especially well engineered. I can live with that,...

As a regular visitor to the Lakes I just wanted to record my feelings of shock and wonder as I watched news footage of the recent floods in Cockermouth . Having walked the 10 miles form Plumbland to Cokermouth a few years ago, I remember the bridges that have now gone and I remember walking through the town looking at the shops and sights. I think of friends who made their home in the town and wonder...

I sat indoors this morning while the rain pounded on the windows and sewed round the last bit of binding on this strippy quilt...feet up on the table with the quilt on my lap. When the rain stopped I ran out to the garden to take a picture while it was dry! I need a record of this one as I want to sell it to try and raise some funds to help my daughter pay for a trip she wants to go on next August...

KELSO – Friday November 20th Going – Heavy (Soft in places) Given the horrendous weather that struck Cumbria and Southern Scotland in the preceding 24 hours it was a bit of a surprise that this meeting took place. The River Tweed had flood warnings and I’d pretty well expected this meeting would get called off. It’s testament to the drainage at the course that the meeting went...

Cumbria has been having a very rough time with the floods, particularly in the North of the county around Cockermouth. The death of a police officer who was having to divert motorists was especially sad. Even though the old Westmorland area, where I used to live, has not been affected in such a devastating way it too is suffering from flooding with several roads closed and Ambleside having been cut...
