I'm sure you'll be as pleased as I am to know that Manor Park has won a Green Flag in this year's judging, so joins the select list of eight Lewisham parks that have the coveted Green Flag: Telegraph Hill Brookmill Park Cornmill Gardens Chinbrook Meadows Manor Park Manor House Gardens Sydenham Wells Bellingham Green Of course if you have a flag you need a flag pole, and I understand Glendale will be...

We are lucky enough to live in the part of Blackheath managed by Greenwich council, who seem to have a more sensible policy on recycling than Lewisham. It means that we were given a little green “caddy” to place kitchen scraps into, which can then be transferred to larger white biodegradable sacks, and then [...]

From the email responses I’ve had it looks like Friday 25th at the Honor Oak works for most. So unless I get a stream of people telling me I’ve got it wrong it looks like thats where we’ll be from about 8 o’clock. Looking forward to it already.

Following up on Arachnophobia, I’m sorry to say that the rare spider found on Blackheath story was definitely a bit of a red herring. I contacted GreenScene (part of Lewisham council), and got a very helpful reply from the aptly named Nick Pond: Dear BB, I have enquired with a local entomologist who responded regarding [...]

A quick note on Monday's Full Council meeting. The Mayor of Lewisham updated us on the post office closures. As you may have noticed, the Post Office has ignored local opinion and closed the three threatened post office including that on Hither Green Lane. Lewisham Council is negotiating with the Post Office to see whether some solution could be found similar to that in Essex, but those negotiations...

Just found a wonderful local history book -”A Century of Lewisham” by John Coulter. One of the best images from it, showing a caravan of camels traipsing up Tranquil Vale towards “Billy Smart’s Circus” on the heath, in the 1950s. The camels were supposed to have been Algerian veterans from the Foreign Legion. Click the [...]

Not a lot of people know this, but the Greenwich Meridian runs right through Lewisham Central ward. Even fewer people might know it in future, because some barbarians have pillaged the monument marking the Meridian line on the Bellway development on Hither Green Lane. Nicked the metal plaques commemorating all the other homolongitudinal sites on our Meridian. Right opposite where I live, so I suppose...

June 2008 is apparently the first Gypsy, Traveller and Roma History Month . As part of it in Lewisham, the London Gypsy Orchestra are playing at Blackheath Halls on June 13th. So here's a bit of South London Gypsy History. The Gypsy presence in South London is marked in some of the place names, most obviously Gypsy Hill. On a more derogatory note, South Norwood Hill was once known as Beggars Hill....

This Thursday evening I will be out with Blackheath Morris Men for their "Lewisham Tour". As I have remarked here on many occasions before, Lewisham is not blessed with many good pubs, in fact I can't think of a worse area in London for decent boozers, so the tour is, by neccesity, confined to two pubs. We start at the wonderful Jolly Farmers on Lewisham Highstreet. Gathering about 7.30 for dancing...

I feel good and full of vegetable chilli now. Went out earlier - jumped on the train to Lewisham (as there was one on its way), and walked on to the Pets at Home on Blackheath Hill, as I needed to pick up some rat bits that my friendly local pet shop doesn't sell. It was lovely to be walking along in the sun.

The Triangle is one of the best kept secrets in the ward. It's a surprisingly quiet and peaceful area of land in a gully between platforms 4 & 5 on Hither Green station which had become derelict until my colleague Cllr Andrew Milton (Lewisham Central ward) and I kick started the restoration process by making funding available from the 2005 Locality Fund. Since 2005, working in partnership with Network...
