I was out canvassing this morning with Joan, Robin and Joe, getting wet and filling in canvassing sheets, that were rapidly turning into paper mache. Now many people would think, we have got a screw loose or are not quite there; but for us it is about the fact that canvassing is an excellent opportunity to help people who have either been missed by the processes and procedures in place at the council...

Across the road from Tower House is another Lewisham tower: its clock tower. Erected to commemorate Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897, there's even a crown on top to highlight the royal association. A plaque near the base explains that the clock was paid for by public subscription, 'supplemented by a grant of £500 from a fund bequeathed to the parish by Michael Thomas Whitehall of Catford'....

Oh dear. Trouble in the Lewisham Labour Party : Mr Michael, a resident of Catford for 26 years, says he and a number of other ethnic minority candidates have been marginalised by the party in a “scandalous apartheid system”, being put forward for unwinnable seats and given no support. He said: “We should be having a party that looks like Lewisham but people in charge at a high level...

Looks like the national post strike is going ahead tomorrow, with SE London expected to be one of the strongholds of strike action. In an earlier walkout in July, there were picket lines outside all 28 delivery centres in south-east London, including New Cross, Peckham, Kennington, Mandela Way and Catford. Out of a unionised work force of 1,500, only 28 people went to work ( see report ). I would urge...

Only one in a hundred reported crimes in London actually gets solved, which means that those criminals who do get caught feel very hard done by. That was the gruesome message delivered by former senior Metropolitan police officer (and LibDem London Mayoral candidate) Brian Paddick at the Blackheath Supper Club this evening. He was very much on [...]

I've started reading George Steiner's After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation . It's my first recent use of Lewisham's library service. Ordered online, the book was delivered to Catford library for my collection for 50p, which is entirely reasonable. The book itself is the hardback first edition, 1975, which doesn't appear to have been read very often. It begins with a discussion of a passage...
