A new menace on the roads of London

This Is London report a new menace on the roads of London. It seems that a new generation of "intelligent" speed traps are being introduced as another way of raising money and making London's roads even more hazardous. These new average speed camera systems will be used to track cars over a wide area - such as a housing estate - instead of the old fashioned Gatso type that just flash at one...

Sunday 25th October: Sweeter than a Daisy Kiss

Dazed & Confused Magazine invited me down to Selfridges for the launch of their T-Shirt collaboration with Edun , designed by Jo Ratcliffe for War Child . 15% of the sales from this limited edition collection will go to their current projects in the Congo ........hence Jo's hand drawn illustrations of a tiger, lion, zebra and snake emblazoned on the front. A little weird to think that whilst we...

As promised...

in my last post I thought I'd give you a wee update as to what's up. Last week was sweet - my first review for Bearded Magazine went online with no major changes from the live editor so that was a good start. On Tuesday what was supposed to be a short night out to see Linda Harrison and Grainne O play at The Boileroom turned into a jaunt that finally put me in bed at 4am...I got up at 8am. Urrrrrgh!...

The launch of the Camden Food Strategy

There was a series of events involving good food, growing and cooking taking place in Camden today in order to launch their "Good Food Strategy" Anna and Rosie from Sustain played a key role in developing this strategy and organising the celebrations. A "seed swap" at Somerstown Community centre, apple day celebrations at Calthorpe and a grow bag project were just a few of the activities...

Cut Out the Job, Cut Out the Stupidity

I see some anti-Christian bias being reported in the Evening Standard: Camden council has told the parishioners from Our Lady Help of Christians in Kentish Town that their leaflets, which advertise meetings to discuss issues including global warming, were not suitable for noticeboards in public libraries or social centres. They have been asked to remove words such as "God" and "Christian"...

[Back when the science was settled, did...

[Back when the science was settled, did we say that we expected more rain? We meant less rain] PORTLAND, Ore. - A study indicates the Pacific Northwest can expect less of both rain and snow in future dry years. That's a change. In the past, scientists have said climate change bringing warmer weather to the region will likely mean more rain and less snow but about the same amount of precipitation overall....

London 365 - One Year of GPS Tracks in London

It is already one year that I am in London this month. So it is time to look back at my personal track record and see where I have been. Of course this goes in comparison with last years 365PLY - One Year Plymouth . It is the same time span, but the amount of data has increased dramatically due to the use of the new device. Plymouth has been recorded with the Garmin Foretrex 201, whereas London has...

Kentish Town

This week I have been living and working in London, staying with my cousin and his girlfriend and wandering 10 minutes down the road to my work experience. I am learning so much from the architects I'm working with! Every morning when I walk down the road I see such a weird and wonderful mix of people. On Wednesday I sat by Camden Lock in the beautiful sunshine, I feel like a proper working woman!...

The NLL Works From Carillion's Perspective

Lurking on the Rail Freight Group's website is a presentation put together by Carillion back in March . It appears to have been intended for a largely internal audience ( Carillion winning the £100m upgrade contract back in February ), and whilst the information it contains is somewhat limited, there are some interesting nuggets in there. Firstly, it contains a Gantt chart giving some project...

"Points of Interest" Tube Map

Haven't seen many spoof or alternative London Underground maps for a while, so it was refreshing to see a work in progress, sent to me by the good folk at LDN Interesting . It takes the Tube map and replaces station names with "main points of interest" for the area. I like how these main points interest should be taken with a massive pinch of salt: If you look on the whole map, you'll see...

Chase Lodge: a future home for Camden football and Kentish Town FC?

Old school football pitches in Barnet, known collectively as Chase Lodge, could modernised to be the new home to Kentish Town Football Club and Hampstead FC , an amateur club for Camden kids, if the Council sets out a bold vision for the future. Chase Lodge playing fields were transferred to the Council after ILEA was broken up in 1990. The land contains 16 acres of playing fields, tennis courts and...

Worried Camden CAB volunteer warns of cuts impact

Update on a previous posts on local Citizens Advice Bureaux : An anonymous Citizens Advice Bureau volunteer has just written a moving letter to all councillors just now, on the issue of the CAB reorganisation which will see many experienced staff replaced by volunteers. Local people complained about this in the CNJ in June . In particular the volunteer writes of their concern for declining provision...

Famous London Pubs - The Worlds End

(Click on image to enlarge) The World's End is a pub in Camden High Street in Camden Town, London, just south of Camden Town tube station. It is a long established business, formerly known as Mother Red Cap or Mother Damnable's . The first reference to a tavern in the area occurs in 1690. At that time the locality was entirely rural and the proprietors relied on trade passing by on the road from London...
