Rereading my post from yesterday on the Hampstead Town by-election I'm struck by how little judgement I passed on the loss by the Tories of a second councillor since May 2006. To paraphrase Lady Bracknell, as so many have done before me, "to lose one councillor, Mr [Marshall], may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose [two] looks like carelessness." Why are the Camden Tories haemorrhaging votes when...

I've decided to use this blog for my eco musings from now on - hence the name change to www.ecocouncillor.org.uk. After all, the main reason I went into active politics was climate change, and I am Chair of Camden Council's Sustainability Task Force , so it seems reasonable to concentratrate my fire on environmental issues. But I can't resist a quick comment on yesterday's by-election in Hampstead...

Very bad news for the Camden Conservatives, as the results show a significant swing from the Tories to the Lib Dems in battleground Hampstead Town seat. On a turnout of 36.7% (around the borough average at the last election, but down from the ward's show-stealing 49% marker) the Conservatives appear to have gone down from around 47% in 2006 to 39.5% in 2008. Meanwhile the Lib Dems appear to have shot...

Hampstead local campaigner Linda Chung has won the Hampstead Town by-election today, gaining the seat from the Conservatives. So much for the Cameron steamroller! She was a brilliant candidate and the Camden LibDems have a formidable election team. For those who don’t know (or have forgotten), they surged in the 2006 local elections to become [...]

Do hate pushing traffic this way but do visit the Camden Lib Dem website - verily it is the 'Pravda' of Lib Dem news. Strange, beyond the smiley faces they seems ot be missing a couple of stories: They don't mention the Hampstead Town by-election - we can only assume they think that their candidate Linda Chung can't win against the Tories, so why bother mentioning it? They also don't mention any explanation...

As if to prove the points of the last few days the now notorious Michael Clarke and the Lib Dem councillor Flick Rae (both of whom have recently been officials of the failed LLDA) have hit the headlines in defiance of a few famous authors in Hampstead. Here is the latest chapter from the Camden New Journal . Incidentally afficionadoes of this site will notice the well-tempered wisdom of Alan Templeton...

Hampstead Heath is famous and well loved for many things; its outstanding natural beauty, the swimming ponds, shagging and tramps being gifted million pound plots. It's also the only place in London that men can legally sunbathe naked, in a special enclosure by the Men's Pond. The Camden Gazette reports how the enclosure is currently split in two parts, almost two thirds is for 'clothed' men and the...

An artist’s impression of how Hampstead Heath may look under the new scheme. Those fine arbiters of good taste at Camden Council are considering selling sponsorship deals on the Borough’s parks. In a move which could see Regents Park rebranded as Nikeland or Primrose Hill renamed Primula Hill, finance chiefs reckon they can pocket half a [...]

The council by-election campaign in Hampstead Town, Camden, is in full swing. Yesterday several of us were out making good use of the one day of real summer this month, manning a survey stall in the High Street, canvassing voters and delivering leaflets. The choice of candidate is often key to winning such contests and [...]

Camden Labour last night (Tuesday 26th August) selected well-known tenants' leader from Russell's Nurseries Larraine Revah as the candidate for the snap Hampstead Town by-election on 25th September 2008. Labour is currently placed second in the ward to the Tories, following the results of the May 2008 elections. Larraine faces a strong Tory vote in the north of the ward, while the Liberal Democrats...

The term ‘Hampstead Liberal’ has often been used by the conservative right as a term of abuse for left-leaning intellectuals who live in the north end of the London borough of Camden, including many people who used to vote Labour before Tony Blair dragged the party towards Thatcherism. Hampstead Town ward is the natural habitat of this much-maligned species [...]

Last night Labour asked some questions about the future of the 'extended' recycling pilot in the north of the borough and got an interesting result: In response to Labour Penny Abraham's question on the success of the twice-weekly Hampstead doorstep recycling pilot, Conservative Mike Greene said: "The pilot service of two recycling and one refuse round was not as successful as hoped and it will not...
