The "soft, thick light" described in Old Suffolk, Henry James's memoir of his 1879 journey to Aldeburgh and seeing the submerged skyline of medieval Dunwich, hung low over Snape last weekend.

Almost a month ago now, at the end of September, I was lucky enough to go with my Mum to the Aldeburgh Food Festival in Suffolk. Whilst called the Aldeburgh festival, the main show is in the lovely Snape Maltings. The Aldeburgh Food Festival is massive, as the whole of the county gets involved in mini events across the weekend festival. The festival celebrates all the fantastic food and foodie businesses...

Not a very eventful Sunday - but we did manage to get ourselves out of the house and over to Snape Maltings, a quaint shopping center and cafe in the Suffolk countryside. I treated myself to a slice of Victoria Sponge cake which is essentially a normal piece of cake without any icing on the top or sides. It was quite nice, but not the best Victoria Sponge I've ever had; Nick has promised to bake me...

Apologies for the 'radio silence' on here of late - have just returned from a lovely week's break in sunny (yes, honestly!) Suffolk. We stayed in the Old Cookery School in Aldeburgh , until recently a genuine working cookery school run by the excellent Thane Prince. A wonderful Georgian building with a lovely kitchen, and surrounded by great food suppliers. The highlight of the trip was the Aldeburgh...

Gilad Atzmon Snape Maltings Concert Hall Suffolk, England August 26, 2009 Snape Concert Hall, set in beautiful Suffolk countryside, was built as a barley malting hall in the 1840s. In 1965 the hall was converted by composer Benjamin Britten into a 900-seat concert venue. Saxophonist Gilad Atzmon loves Snape Concert Hall--and, lest his love affair with the place wasn't clear from his playing, he went...

There's something of a food renaissance happening in Suffolk right now. Farmers' markets and food festivals are springing up around the county and local suppliers have their own media-friendly poster boy, in the form of TV farmer Jimmy Doherty, who has grown from Jamie Oliver's Mini-Me into a canny champion of the area's food culture.

Suffolk At home in Somerset, we have our own broad, tidal estuaries, but to sit under a wide East Anglian sky beside the expanse of one of Suffolk's five estuaries felt like being in a different world. This was the estuary of the river that changes its name from Alde to Ore between Aldeburgh and Orford. At low tide in the evening we looked out across shining pools and low mudbanks towards Iken church...
