A Thetford vicar has used strong words to voice concerns about outsiders being selected as parliamentary candidates in his constituency. He also accuses David Cameron of “arrogant interference”. Canon Bob Baker makes no direct reference to Liz Truss, the Conservative candidate selected for South West Norfolk who will need all her inner strength and charm today [...]

On a fairly regular basis, I randomly get stopped by people wanting to speak to me as a 'councillor'. Whether it be in the street, at the local Supermarket, walking through the town centre, or wherever. I have no problems talking to people, it is part of the job, even if I am in a rush, I make time to talk and answer questions. I make myself very 'available' - I have no issues giving out my home telephone...

Seeing as this woman is likely to be the next MP for SW Norfolk, I think the issue raised in the EDP today is very important - no, not the fact that she had an affair (although, personally, I think this is an issue, and I'm sure for some this would be a very big issue) was she clear about it to those Conservative members voting for her, or did she deliberately avoid the issue? Did she lie? While there...

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned companies to ensure they look after young workers, after two Norfolk teenagers suffered electric shocks while working on a farm near Thetford. One of the teenagers had to have his little toe and part of his big toe amputated from his left foot. He has also been left with long scars where cuts were made to relieve the pressure build-up in his legs.

From Britain’s highest medieval castle mound the sea of green forest stretched to the horizon. I had followed the Heritage Trail around Thetford and climbed the hill to watch and pray. The town has an image of being an unlovely London overspill and a centre for European immigrants, but is much more. Since early days it has been the Gateway to Norfolk . The first fortifications were built 500...

A bit of a change for me this weekend as I spent it photographing the Sekai Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu Renmei Martial Arts Seminar held in Thetford, Norfolk. The event, now in it's eighth year, was organsised by Kevin Pell Hanshi who founded Sekai Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu Renmei back in 1990. Flint occurs where there's chalk. And nowhere was it used to greater effect than in Norfolk, where the absence of other building stone or suitable timber could be found. This is one of the very hardest of minerals, composed of almost 100% silica. Usually we will see flint knocked into smaller units (knapping) and used as outer decoration on buildings. It could be mined, as at Grimes Graves near Thetford,...

Quick sketches of pebbles and shells all done with a Parker biro in a moleskine sketchbook, Vivien Blackburn The first one is, I think, flint* - are the holes softer elements that have eroded away in the sea? it looks as though something has been eating it! like a potato attacked by slugs with smooth even tunnels. And a very bad sketch of a mussel shell covered in barnacles and with the flat pattern...
