Birding with Pam and Anne (Free subscription) | 02/11/2009
Saturday October 31 Walking in Scuilly decided it. Time to look at lighter gear for holidays at home and abroad. I arrived at Cley Spy intending to buy a Nikon 50 scope, small enough to fit in my pocket. I left with an Opticron 50! So new that there was only one in the shop. My immediate reaction on looking through both was that the Opticron was better optically, brighter and the eyepiece easier to...

Yesterday on my way home I called at my feeding station on Rawcliffe Moss. As I drove down the track towards the farm buildings I flushed three Jays ahead of the car. Although you do get Jays on the moss, they aren't common unless it is one of those invasion years. As I watched them fly away from me on rounded wings with white rump glinting in the soft afternoon light I thought thank **** I'm not having...

Trapped and ringed by myself this afternoon at Snettisham Coastal Park, Norfolk. I put a two shelf net across the small reed channel hoping to catch the 10 Bearded Tits that had been calling all morning, these pass through regularly each Oct / Nov. On the last net round of the session I walked up to the net to see a small bird in the far end, thinking it was a Beardie I was chuffed with the decision...

I had family round yesterday evening for a buffet and a few drinks and a few more drinks and a few more drinks! I knew that unless the weather forecast was absolutely spot on, whatever that is, it would be a non-birding day for me today. And it was, almost. A lie in and then it was a trip to Lancaster to take some provisions to one of my lads at uni there, but on the way I called at my feeding station...

No Bill Oddie, a later slot and a longer run for the 2009 edition of BBC2's Autumnwatch Rutting deer, newborn seals and a couple of million (probably) migrating birds: it can only be one thing – BBC2's Autumnwatch is back. Except this year, it is going to be slightly different. We knew there would be no Bill Oddie - he was replaced on this year's Springwatch by Chris Packham , who remains with...

All Day I Dream About Sailing (Free subscription) | 01/09/2009
The day finally came - the day I knew was inevitable - the day I would leave Snettisham Beach Sailing club for waters new and uncharted (by me at least). The day marked the end of an era and the last summer of racing on the Norfolk coast, from now on I will be a visitor when I return, and I will return! The reason for this sad day is our move of home to North Yorkshire, just east of Leeds in a place...

This last month has been a bit hectic really with airshows at Eastbourne and Dawlish, I took the chance to photograph Stonehenge en route; I also took my mum away for a few days to Plymouth, part of the reason for picking Plymouth was because there was the finals of the UK firework display championships, a two night spectacle of noise and colour, she loves fireworks and really enjoyed the show, we...

On my return to Norfolk the kind offer of a lift from Simeon and James tempted me out to Cley NWT, where the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER showed fairly well although quite distantly on north scrape from north hide, only my third in the U.K. (following singles at Wicken Fen, Cambs and Snettisham RSPB), although I would happily have swapped it for the White-winged Black Tern that has just come up on the pager...

Male House Sparrow, Snettisham, Norfolk I can remember as a kid going to St James Park in London and being amazed by the Sparrow Man, who hand fed the large flock of House Sparrows that lived there, he even had some feed on food he held between his pursed lips. Since then Sparrows have disappeared from much of London and much work has been done to try and understand the reasons for their decline. As...

Happy birthday, 24-hour Room Service: It was 10 years ago yesterday that The IndependentTraveller launched this series of hotel reviews (One Aldwych in London was the first candidate). To mark the first decade, we have chosen somewhere a bit out of the ordinary: Carrington House in Norfolk.

Party houses Carrington House, Norfolk There's room for an entire dynasty at this soon to open house in Snettisham, brought to you by the people responsible for the similarly glam Cliff Barns. Like the Tardis, Carrington House's traditional Georgian exterior gives way to another world the moment you turn that key. A whirlwind of hedonistic luxury - think luscious shag pile, graphic prints and lots...

Today was the last day of Harry's school Summer holidays, tomorrow he will start a new term in a new class and leave me for six hours daily, five days a week...AGAIN! I shall miss his company and our long days together. To make the most of our final day we headed towards the Norfolk coast to visit Snettisham Park Farm where we fed pigs, lambs, ponies, chickens and goats. Park farm has a lovely personal...
