The home I grew up in ... was a council house in Basildon, Essex, until I was nine. Then we moved into an old vicarage my dad had bought that was in serious need of renovation; we stayed there until I was 16. It was wonderful: 300 years old and full of character.

I'd be happy to meet up for a coffee if anyone is around the Basildon area on Friday of this week. More specifically I'll be attending the Essex Total Business Show at Holiday Inn, Waterfront Walk, Basildon Essex, SS14 3DG. I expect to be there from just after 10:00 until 12:00 or 13:00 or longer - depending upon how many people I meet up with (already have a couple of meetings booked!). Seems a great...

So, they passed it. We are going to have a refuse treatment plant at Courtauld Road in Pitsea that will treat the rubbish of the whole of the South of the county, thanks to Essex County Council passing the planning application. This was opposed by Basildon District Council, all parties in a rare moment of unanimity, local pressure groups and the local population. In fact, I never met a single person...

I’ve been talking to everyone and anyone about Basildon, recently. I’m doing some work in the town for a client and it’s both a joy and a shocker to get off the train at Basildon Station. It’s joyous to be out in the provinces, although, Essex isn’t exactly Hartlepool (or the like) but it is [...]

Last April I posted about Luke Mackenzie, a Tory candidate who was standing in the British National Party (BNP) target ward of Basildon in Essex. Mr Mackenzie had been accused of peddling scare stories by suggesting that people who wanted to stop asylum-seekers being given council houses should vote Conservative. The Times reported that Mr Mackenzie's future as a Conservative candidate was 'hanging...

What would a 'nine-minute limousine' be? One produced every nine minutes? 0-100 in nine minutes? Or is it a stretch-limo that will take a bubbly posse of screaming Essex girls from Basildon to the West End in a vodka and coke induced blur that seems like just nine minutes (to the passengers that is, but more like nine hours for the driver)? No, it was an amusing advertising tagline used by Lada in...
