Notes on getting serious about staffing for online news

Mark Potts on what it takes to shift a news organization’s focus from print to Web: “How many newspapers have a sizable staff responsible for managing print circulation? All of them of course. Now, how many have even one staff member responsible for managing online distribution via RSS, e-mail or Facebook? Damn few. How many newspapers have [...]

Barack Obama’s sad fear of Fox News

The Oct. 16 Alfred E. Smith Dinner in New York was a beautiful example of civility during a political campaign, and both John McCain and Barack Obama spoke with humor and respect. There was only one sour note that evening. It was Obama’s unnecessarily bitter remark , referring to McCain’s complaints elsewhere about news media bias: “By the way, John, I’m just curious, is Fox News included...

Guardian column: Witnesses take over the news

Here’s my Guardian column this week: reaction to witnesses’ growing role in the news in Mumbai. The last mass-news story was 9/11, packaged from a distance. The 7/7 attacks on London and the 2004 tsunami then brought the perspective of witnesses via their cameras. The Sichuan earthquake and the Mumbai attacks brought the urgency of Twitter. [...]

The new news mindset

It’s so great to see more and more news executives face the tough questions in the business and recognize the fundamental and urgent change upon them. Why media organizations should be careful about picking up each other's "sourced" reports without checking them out themselves

... a simple rule: don't repeat something if you don't know it's true. Just parroting what another news organization reports in an "unnamed source" report is bad journalism. I trust my sources and the sources of my Newsday reporter bretheren. I can't trust another newspaper's sources because i don't know who those sources are. Most of the time sourced reports turn out to be true....

Jeff Jarvis: A scenario for the future of news

... with many models to find and invent what will work (that's why we held the New Business Models for News Summit at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism ). It's fair to expect me to put forward scenarios for the future of news. In a sense, that's all I ever do on my blog, but there's no one permalink summarizing my apparently endless prognostication. So here is a snapshot of - a strawman...

NBC News Sells Commemorative Obama Yes We Can! DVD

Right before the 9:35am segment on Monday's Today show, a commercial from NBC News aired announcing a special DVD on Barack Obama's life story for sale on its Web site. What is particularly odd is that a news organization would actually use Obama's own campaign slogan to title the DVD, and if memory serves there was no special DVD offered for George W. Bush's inauguration. How...
