David Willetts is looking unusually pink, well-scrubbed and excited – and for good reason. He has cycled into work and had a quick shower. And he has just learnt that Gordon Brown made a big boo-boo when he increased student grants last year. The government simply hadn't done its sums properly and is having now to cut grants to balance the books.

Tories would give colleges more freedom

Colleges will get greater freedom to choose what they teach if the Conservatives get back into government, they were promised today. The government should give further education the sort of leeway universities get, and trust it to respond to local needs, said David Willetts, shadow secretary for skills. He promised college principals an end to the frequent policy switches that Labour had forced...

The government's approach to university expansion is like "trying to drive a car with the accelerator and brake both pressed to the floor", the Tory universities secretary will say today. The shadow universities secretary, David Willetts, will argue that is "absurd" to set a target of 50% of the population participating in higher education by 2010 while "prohibiting universities from meeting...

Roman past 'neglected'

COLCHESTER councillors should “hang their heads in shame” at the neglect of the town's Roman heritage, it has been claimed. The accusation comes from Dennis Willetts, himself a borough councillor, who is furious about what he says is the continued lack of funds being spent on the “exceptional” historic sites. He has now demanded to know why Colchester Borough Council does not have a financial...
