This has been matured in old and new American oak, and to my sensibilities that oak has added some off custardy characters that I find distracting. It’s otherwise a tip-top, top-tier wine - if you don’t mind these notes, you’ll rate it higher than me. You need a subscription to The Wine Front to see this [...]

De Iuliis isn’t just the hardest name to spell in Australian wine, it’s also one of the great quiet achievers. This Show Reserve Shiraz is a superlative release, from a great Hunter red vintage, at a very reasonable price. You need a subscription to The Wine Front to see this part of the post

2002 Palandri Estate Shiraz, my rating- very good This was a very interesting wine and popular at Joanne & Amanda's graduation party, even the beer drinkers went back for more. The bottle was a 3 liter double magnum and likely contributed to the wine keeping so well for a 2002. Not an over the top Aussie Shiraz, moderate 13.5% alcohol, ripe dark fruit upfront followed with complex secondary aromas...

I’ve been meaning to post this note separately for some time - though it’s a wine made in such miniscule quantity (frosts devastated the yield) that unless you got in on day one of the mailing list offer, I suspect that you missed out. If Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier follows my prediction - of one day [...]

Meerea Park have been through a (pardon the pun) purple patch recently, especially with their red wines. The 2003, 2004 and 2005 vintages were very good to exceptional and the 2006 vintage of "The Aunts" Shiraz is no exception. There is one big difference this year, your favorite Aunts now come dressed in a red frock.

Tasting notes: Big aromas of raspberry jam and custard on the nose Rich and mouth-filling on the palate Smooth finish loaded with crushed berries and surprising nuances of tea, cocoa, and earth Australian red wine might be dominated by Shiraz, but don't miss the exciting Grenache. This wine has the big fruit you'd expect from an Australian red, but it also has some surprising layers that round out...

The Butcher's Tree is an interesting name for a wine. Heaven knows what butchers do with trees that other people don't. I think I'd rather not know. The wine is suitably macho. It's a dark purple-garnet with thick legs and a heady aroma of cooked, spiced fruit and leathery smoke, accompanied by a wallop of alcohol. It's dry and smooth with a full body. The fruit is almost chewy with blackberries and...

Open-textured, medium-bodied and distinctive for its coffee-accented blackberry and black olive flavors, finishing with fine tannins. Best from 2011 through 2020. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,000 cases imported.

(emphasis not mine). It’s on premise and cellar door only and ready for drinking now. You [...]
