Are handbrakes going out of fashion? I did more driving than average last week because I was on holiday near Petersfield in Hampshire (travelling to various attractions each day) and was surprised how many times I noticed people obviously juggling clutch, brakes and accelerator at traffic lights. You can see their cars edge forward and (more disconcerting, especially if you are behind them) back....

The “hangers” are alight. It’s as if Bonfire Night has come a week early to the steep wooded scarps that run between Alton and Petersfield. Hampshire, England - not New Hampshire, New England, mind - on one of the very last days of October, and the autumn colours are proving every inch a match for those of the vaunted American fall.
