ESPN's Buster Olney says there's tension brewing at Comerica Park between Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski : • Folks who know both GM Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland believe there is serious tension between the two that could manifest itself in some way if the Tigers get off to a poor start in 2009. No elaboration from there, but I suppose the point is clear. It certainly seemed...

Cora bats left-handed; Santiago is a switch-hitter.Neither player is known for his offensive ability. Cora is a .245 lifetime batter, Santiago .238. Both are considered sound defensively. The Tigers also have had...

Over the past year at BYB , I've spent a handful of posts wondering if Matt Walbeck will eventually succeed Jim Leyland as manager of the Detroit Tigers. He was a fast-riser in the Tigers' minor league system from 2004 to 2007, quickly moving from West Michigan to Erie, highlighted by being named Baseball America 's Manager of the Year for the '07 season. But maybe that's an idea I need to let...

... CIGARETTE BUTT Ex-umpire Sonny Fulks recalled a minor-league game in the 1970s when chain-smoker Jim Leyland, then managing the Lakeland (Fla.) Tigers, had just fired one up when Fulks called a balk on Leyland's pitcher. “He ran out on the field to argue and jammed the cigarette in the hip pocket of his pants, which were double-knit,” Fulks told the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. “By the...

JOE TORRE answers questions in pensive paragraphs. Jim Leyland - now there's a baseball man. Mike Scioscia can small-ball you to death and, in this year's American League Division Series at least, can small-ball his own team to death, too.

Zduriencik was scouting director of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1991 to 1993, while McClendon played for the team. (Jim Leyland, of course, was the manager then.) Zduriencik is now the Seattle Mariners’ general manager, and he will soon start interviewing managerial candidates.

You never know, but it's a gut instinct."Those echo previous statements from Dombrowski and Leyland around the end of the season.Neither Dombrowski nor manager Jim Leyland ruled out the possibility of Santiago starting for them if other options fall through. If so, however, those concerns would seemingly lead to a platoon role, with the Tigers bringing in another shortstop to...
