After 13 years of pecking away at screenplays, Jenny Lumet is finally seeing one of her scripts come to life on the big screen. “Rachel Getting Married,” a drama that opened Friday, documents the havoc wreaked at a wedding by the bride’s sister, a recovering addict played by Anne Hathaway. ( Kansas City Star critic Robert Butler gave it four stars.)

Like Zombie did a few weeks ago, yesterday I treated myself to a morning at the cinema and saw Rachel Getting Married . Written by Jenny Lumet, Rachel Getting Married is, as I'm sure you're well aware by now, about dysfunctional ex-junkie Kym, played wonderfully by Anne Hathaway, getting leave from rehab to attend her sister Rachel's wedding. and all that happens over that wedding weekend....

Part 1 of 2: Rachel Getting Married Special When I interviewed screenwriter Jenny Lumet she claimed ignorance, blissful ignorance, when it came to the movie industry. While it's true that she grew up in a famous household (she calls legendary Lena Horne grandmother and one of Hollywood's most lauded filmmakers, Sidney Lumet, father) she didn't know the fine details of getting script...

... sticks better than any character's in recent memory.Director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Jenny Lumet's dedication to reality has both its pros and cons. One positive is the work's style: like any homemade documentary, the story is portrayed through shaky low-quality cameras with awkward lighting and gritty visuals. On the down side, several of the film's sequences-such as the...

... saw Rachel Getting Married last night and want to tell you that it is a total gem. The script, by Jenny Lumet, is amazing -- extremely mature and subtle and featuring complex, finely drawn characters across the board. But it's the absolute audaciousness of the movie itself that is overwhelming. The rehearsal dinner toasts go on and on. We start to think, "Okay, this is too much."...

Anne Hathaway gives a powerful performance in 'Rachel Getting Married' **** Samuel Johnson famously remarked that a second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience. Director Jonathan Demme and screenwriter Jenny Lumet, in their tumultuous and moving Rachel Getting Married , suggest that this saying applies to a first marriage, too, when the bride or groom is the product of a shattered...

Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting Married , from a screenplay by Jenny Lumet , condenses many of the key preoccupations of a three-decade directorial career that is better-known for its less personal The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Oscar-aspirant Philadelphia (1993) examples, or even for its inexplicable remakes - The Truth About Charlie (2002) and The Manchurian Candidate (2004) -...

... around the incursion of a not-fully-rehabilitated narcissist into a celebration that isn't hers. Jenny Lumet's script is modest in the best sense. The action takes place over one weekend. When Kym arrives, the house is full of people rehearsing music, setting up tents, generally enjoying the prenuptial buildup. It's a scene Kym responds to with impatience, dread and contempt. The...
