Youngsters scrambled down the aisles of the auditorium to meet one of the few athletes from Salem to ever play in the major leagues. But the most excited fan might have been Laurie Ashworth, a science instructor who taught Lowrie at Parrish Middle School.

... in mind some of the Sox players today who were supplemental picks in their day: Clay Buchholz, Jed Lowrie and Michael Bowden. So those picks can be pretty valuable (I wouldn’t expect every one of them to turn to gold like that, but you get my point).

Since the Detroit trade deal is pretty much dead , the Red Sox must decide what to do with Julio Lugo. Last season Lugo was a disaster at the plate and in the field, the calls for his benching grew louder until an injury ended his season. With Jed Lowrie emerging as the every day shortstop Lugo is out of a job. If the Red Sox do keep him he will have some value as a backup infielder and outfielder....
