Political (re-)education - handle with care

Excitement is mounting with further 'evidence' in the polls of the Labour Party's recovery albeit only back to where we were pre-Brown. A magnificent polling result in Plumstead highlights the powerful influence of a well-organised campaigning CLP in Greenwich and Woolwich. As Political Futures opines it is too soon to start making any judgements about the [2008] conference season. There are lessons...

[Blogs] Labour win by-election with a 6.6% swing

Great news in Greenwich. Last night in a by-election in the Plumstead ward, Labour retained the seat with 6.6% swing from the Tories. Hospice worker Matthew Morrow won with a 776 majority, with the Labour vote going up 13.25% on 2006. Fulll result: Labour 1320, Conservative, 542, Lib Dems 195, Greens 175. Looks like the first example of the post conference Brown bounce. Well done to all at Greenwich...

The Deadly Kacia Tree Of Olde Greenwich Towne...

Benedict, you were moaning that there haven't been enough pictures recently, so this one's for you... I was sent this fabbo comic a short while ago, (among others, all of which are wonderful) and I was put in mind of it when I was walking down Old Woolwich Road one darkening evening. There, peeping out from behind a high wall, was - OMG - surely not? The deadly Kacia Tree of Bandar! Could it be that...

Wednesday 13 September 1665

Up, and walked to Greenwich , taking pleasure to walk with my minute watch in my hand, by which I am come now to see the distances of my way from Woolwich to Greenwich, and do find myself to come within two minutes constantly to the same place at the end of each quarter of an houre. Here we rendezvoused at Captain Cocke's , and there eat oysters , and so my Lord Bruncker , Sir J. Minnes , and I took...

Greenwich Heritage Centre

Last week I went to the Greenwich Heritage Centre , it's next to the Firepower museum on the old Woolwich Arsenal. It was fantastic, for reasons I'll expand on shortly. However I will briefly get a negative issue out of the way, and then I can be all positive and glowy, which will be nice. As I walked up to the Heritage Centre from the river path I went along the side of the building, I then came across...

Thursday 31 August 1665

Up and, after putting several things in order to my removal, to Woolwich ; the plague having a great encrease this week, beyond all expectation of almost 2,000, making the general Bill 7,000, odd 100; and the plague above 6,000. I down by appointment to Greenwich , to our office, where I did some business, and there dined with our company and Sir W. Boreman , and Sir The. Biddulph, at Mr. Boreman's...

Campaiging in Plumstead

This morning I spent a pleasant couple of hours out in the sunshine, in Plumstead ward delivering leaflets for the forthcoming by-election there. However, whilst I was pounding the streets I came across Greenwich Council's much heralded, and talked about, new "Eco-House". Now, as I looked at it I could clearly see why it was an eco-house, and that at the moment it's producing zero emissions. Which...

A sort of testing story about the London 2012 olympics

From Reuters Olympics minister Tessa Jowell has commissioned a viability test on the proposed equestrian venue at Greenwich Park, the shooting facilities at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich and the basketball venue on the main Olympic Park. “We have commissioned KPMG to do a report on the equestrian, shooting and basketball venues, looking at whether the Olympic [...]

All change

And so it begins... three of the proposed 2012 Olympic venues are "being evaluated" to see if they deliver value for money. These are three of the temporary venues, in Greenwich Park*, Woolwich Barracks and a weird temporary basketball arena...

Deep Hole

The Labour MP for Greenwich and Woolwich the former local government minister Nick Raynsford has written an article and said that Labour was in a 'deep hole' and he has warned Gordon Brown he risked inviting the contempt of voters with attempts to buy support with emergency tax cuts. Raynsford also said Labour needed to 'stop inappropriate digging', and instead focus on the 'steps necessary to extract...

Laundry

Katja asks: "Can you or anyone else recommend laundry/dry cleaning services in Greenwich, which do duvets as well?" The Phantom replies: I can never quite remember what it's called (I think it's something original like "Greenwich Dry Cleaners") but the one along Woolwich Road, opposite the old hospital site is the one I always go to. The guy can often be seen sitting in the window, doing repairs on...

Winter Holidays in Greenwich

Meri asks: I am coming to London from Darwin, Australia with my husband and children for Christmas. Staying three weeks. We are visiting my brother and his wife, who live in Eltham. However, we thought we would stay in the Greenwich area. A number of apartments are available for rent. There are available properties in Bellott Street, Woodland Grove, Blissett street, Westcombe Park Road. Also one in...

The Eltham Centre

Yesterday, forced to look further afield for swimming options, Brockley Central visited the Eltham Centre, Greenwich's latest community pool. The Eltham Centre replaces Eltham's old, urine-coloured baths that have now closed down. The pool is dedicated to proper swimming, with none of the slides and rapids to be found at Woolwich Waterfront. Squeezed just behind the high street, on to a site that,...
