Tim Iacono submits: It's been kind of hectic here in San Francisco for the last couple days, so I didn't actually get around to reading this story in the Telegraph, but I just had to share the title and the image. Obviously a deflationista, Mr. Hendry stopped making sense shortly after he concluded the discussion of the late 19th century debate on bimetalism, which was, indeed, a very nice summary...

US interest rate graph WRITING in Slate magazine in 1997, Paul Krugman, an American economist, neatly captured the widespread belief in the omnipotence of the then-chairman of the Federal Reserve. “If you want a simple model for predicting the unemployment rate in the United States over the next few years, here it is: it will be what [Alan] Greenspan wants it to be, plus or minus a random error...

Jeffrey Rogers Hummel and David Henderson have responded to critics of their defense of Alan Greenspan’s monetary policy. Answering particularly the criticisms of Cato adjunct scholar George Selgin, they provide further evidence for their contention that Greenspan was not pursuing an unduly loose monetary policy in the early years of this decade. As I noted before, in [...]

We can't add this one officially to Greenspan's Body Count because the case remains unresolved. The daughter of the victims was a creepy kook who stood to inherit a million dollars, her mom was allegedly slutting around town, and there were various other suspects. But police believe the murderer is Greg and Bernadette Ohlemachers' Countrywide mortgage broker Ron Santiago. We'll reserve judgment...

Chambliss: Well, he says he would have voted against it. Of course, the guy that he’s joined at the hip with, President-elect Obama, voted for it. You know, that clip is interesting. That was about four seconds out of a 40-minute speech I gave that morning — and which, incidentally, when I made that statement, I was quoting Alan Greenspan, who I have a lot more confidence in than I do Mr. Martin’s...

... help. Those of us who believe this idea have long thought of Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan as an ally, so I was intrigued when I saw news reports (now repeated over and over) that he “changed his mind”. Except, he didn't. When I look at the actual transcripts , it's clear to me that careless news reporters have simply spun his remarks incorrectly. Here's the key quote: Chairman...

“There’s a nutty side to libertarians, starting with the Big Girl, Ayn Rand, and going straight through Alan Greenspan. When I go to Cato Institute functions, there’s always a group of guys who look like they cut their own hair and get their mothers to dress them, with lots of buttons about legalizing heroin and demanding a return to the gold standard. The institute has tried to weed them out...

The news stories about deflation have been mushrooming again much as they did back in the early 2000s. Back then, Ben Bernanke was a member of the Fed but Greenspan was still chairman. Bernanke convinced Greenspan that deflation was imminent and that it had to be stopped. Oh my God! We can’t let prices fall! [...]

Here’s Saxby Chambliss defending himself, on the Fox News, against a Jim Martin ad that quotes Chambliss saying he doesn’t even know what the term “recession” means. We’ll cut him some slack on that, because a new person is declaring a new version of the word everyday. But what’s notable is that Chambliss defends his comment by saying that he was quoting Alan Greenspan, people. He appears still...
