Swanning Around

Let me just make it clear before I start on this - this is in no way a review. I know very little about ballet and I am, it is fair to say, much more at home in a dark, dirty bar drinking warm lager and watching some hairy people making noises with guitars than I am in a quiet theatre watching people dance. That said, I have to confess that I did quite enjoy the first hour. As a sometime musician myself,...

Ticketless Celtic fans that are going to travel to next Tuesday’s Champions League match against Manchester United have urged not to travel as both Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police are desperate to avoid a repeat of the ugly scenes involving a minority of Rangers supporters who travelled south to watch their team in the UEFA Cup Final defeat to Zenit St. Petersburg last season....

Mixing it up at 'The Lake'

There's a few changes taking place around WHLN at the moment, the observant amongst you may notice, not least the appointment of a dedicated editor. That's me, by the way - Percy. Nice to meet you. Over the next few months I'm going to be giving WHLN a right old shake up, looking to secure it as the number one 'real' guide to Manchester. I think we're doing pretty well as it is but there are a few...

Criticisms for Manchester charge system

The debate over congestion charges continues to rage with the Freight Transport Association (FTA) branding the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities’ (AGMA) proposals for a system as potentially damaging for the economic future of the area. It believes that the consequences for businesses in the area could be worrying with transport costs rising significantly with little [...]

Champion Beer of Greater Manchester

Announced yesterday at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival, it is Pictish Alchemists Ale , a clear, golden, hoppy, little number which, alas, wasn't on my panel's list of beers. Second was Greenfield Black Five and third was Phoenix Spotland Gold. All are brewed in my CAMRA Branch's area, so a clean sweep for us. Hooray! Pictish are fine brewers. In fact some would say that Richard Sutton of Pictish...

Vermilion offering special festival menu

There’s lots of stuff going on at the Manchester Food and Drink Festival this week, both in the temporary ‘tipis’ they’ve set up in Spinningfields and in the restaurants around the city. Vermilion, the amazingly lavish restaurant near Sport City, have a rather attractive offer on of a festival set menu plus unlimited wine for £35, available every day throughout October, except Fridays and Saturdays....

Warehouse Project Tickets Selling Fast

If you were hoping to get a last minute ticket to either of this weekend's Warehouse Project events you'd be sorely dissappointed as they're both sold out - and have been for some time! It's looking like you'll have to get in quick for any of the other dates too as the rest are gradually going the same way - there are only 100 tickets left for the Richie Hawtin party on 17th October and Dizzee Rascal...

Food and Drink Festival

This annual event is under way at the Spinningfields area of Manchester. I've been helping doing some set up. On Friday, the Best Beer Brewed in Greater Manchester will be announced from entries submitted from the region's many breweries. All the beers will be on sale to the public and I'll be chairing one of the tasting panels. As if that isn't enough good beer, the well known Marble Arch Pub is hosting...

What is illegal?

The BBC cheerily report that "A Greater Manchester police officer has been forced to resign after he was seen wearing a British National Party (BNP) badge at a football match. Stuart Janaway, 36, from Irlam in Salford, wore the BNP badge to a game at Old Trafford in September 2006, while he was off duty. A misconduct hearing was held last Friday after an investigation by the force's Professional Standards...

Saturday In The City

A rainy Saturday afternoon is one of the best excuses to sit in a bar listening to live music - if you feel the need to create excuses. Night and Day was one of the few places to offer some free 'fringe' events for this In The City thing that's come to town so I decamped for the afternoon to see what was going on. Not a lot is the answer, in truth - a few blokes with guitars singing songs about getting...

Veteran Policeman Forced to Resign for Wearing BNP Badge

The disgraceful fascists who run Britain’s police force have forced a 14 year veteran of the Greater Manchester Police to resign simply because he was seen wearing a BNP badge while off duty at a football match. Stuart Janaway, 36, from Irlam in Salford, wore the BNP badge to a game at Old Trafford in September 2006, while he was off duty. The fascists held a “misconduct hearing” last Friday after...
