The Astros are left with veteran Geoff Blum and youngsters Tommy Manzella, Edwin Maysonet and Drew Sutton as backup infielders on the 40-man roster. Blum filled in at every infield position last season. Maysonet, who was given a September look, played sparingly at second base and shortstop. Manzella and Sutton have never played in the Majors.

He didn’t excel in those at-bats, either, hitting just .218 at Round Rock. Geoff Blum might begin the season at third, and if Johnson hits in the minors, he could get a shot. Replacing Valverde will be much tougher. Wade’s first choice might have been Jose Ceda, who drew rave reviews while flying through the Cubs’ farm system.
