I’ve criticised Denilson’s performances on several occasions this season, but have always tried to mitigate that with the assertion that it is not his fault that he is being exposed to regular first-team football before he is ready. That said, as I flicked through some statistics from the season so far, a different picture began to emerge. [...]

... stated to play some good football, there were obvious weaknesses in midfield with neither Song nor Denilson offering much in either attack or defence. Chelsea took the lead in the most unfortunate of manners, Almunia dealt well with a corner. Instead of waiting for his players to get into position, he rushed a throw out to Nasri, which never reached him. Chelsea attacked down Arsenal’s left...

... shape there too. We had a couple of decent chances too, van Persie forcing a smart save (before Denilson dived like an arse), and Gallas just missing out on a rebound. Unfortunately, Almunia - who had not long before punched poorly, twice - rolled the ball out, too short, and possession was conceded. The ball was whipped back in and Djourou shanked it into his own net. Almunia takes all...

... game, I saw the line-ups and immediately compared the midfields. Arsenal’s: Nasri, Cesc, Song, Denilson. Chelsea’s: Mikel, Kalou, Ballack, Deco, Lampard. Like them or (much more probably) loathe them, those last three are right up there when you’re talking about the best midfielders in world football over the last 10 or 15 years - midfield generals for major European nations and superclubs...

... a smart move to partner Cesc Fabregas with the defensive-minded Alex Song in the middle, pushing Denilson out to the right as a consequence. Nasri started on the left while Adebayor was paired with van Persie up front. It was a superb team selection by the manager and the exact side that I would have picked if I was in his shoes. Chelsea bossed most of the first half, their fullbacks Ashley...

... him get stuck in and position himself in the right places. Looked lost earlier in the game. 15 - Denilson, 6 Struggled. Granted he was out of position, but was still slow on the ball, allowed Cole to much space and took a very heavy touch when Bendtner put him in late on. 8 - Nasri, 7 Unspectacular but worked hard in the second half supporting Clichy and kept the ball decently. 25 - Adebayor,...

... the result, there were a couple of flaws. Alex Song is not a midfielder, in any shape or form. Denilson is out of puff and needs a rest and Almunia has had too many bangs on the head in recent weeks and it’s showing. I don’t know what was said at half-time and by who but it did the trick. The gap is now 7 points but we play the scousers at home in three weeks. Hopefully we can make progress...

... it as justiceReplays showed that Van Persie was clearly in an offside position when he received Denilson's pass for the strike that cancelled out Johan Djourou's own goal and inspired Arsenal on their way to an unlikely 2-1 victory. "A couple of years ago, I scored a goal against Chelsea and I was onside but the ref gave it offside so it didn't count," said Van Persie. "Maybe it was a little...

Having started the season well, scoring a couple of goals, and filling the boots of Flamini admirably, recent weeks have seen Denilson run out of steam. Still young, Denilson needs to take a deep breathe and realise he is at the crossroads of his career. Wenger has opted not to recruit anybody else, though this may [...]
