Abolish it: what we should really do with VAT

Daniel Hannan's excellent post on ConservativeHome deserves looking at . Dan examines the idea he and I mooted in our book, The Plan ; abolish VAT and replace it with a local sales tax - set and collected locally. Under the hated council tax-system, town halls are under the thumb of unaccountable officials in Whitehall . Council tax goes up and up and up - and those you elect have remarkably little...

Depression Watch: you don't say

Daniel Hannan points out the obvious : We tried to warn you. We said that the bail-out would fail. We pointed out that nationalisation never worked. We predicted that the seizure of the banks would be accompanied by heavy-handed state intervention in their procedures. Sure enough, stock exchanges have continued to plummet, several banks (notably, as Ambrose reports, in Ireland) are looking for additional...

The audacity of Dave

In our latest lead review, Daily Mail political columnist Peter Oborne takes a second look at Dylan Jones’s much-maligned book of interviews with the Tory leader, Cameron on Cameron, and at Douglas Carswell & Daniel Hannan’s manifesto for Cameron’s Tories, The Plan: Twelve Months to Renew Britain. The Cameron that emerges from Oborne’s reading is [...]

Strictest Come Dancing Ever

Daniel Hannan, commenting on Strictly Come Dancing, says that the saddest song ever written is a pasa doble called Suspiros de España . While we're on the dance floor, I really must recommend the saddest story of the Mexican dance-halls, the corrido , Rosita Alvirez . It has everything: love, death, family strife, and rhythm.

The Plan

A few weeks ago I attended the launch of The Plan: twelve months to RENEW BRITAIN , the new book by Douglas Carswell and Daniel Hannan. I've had the chance to read it now, and I can confirm that it's excellent stuff. Hannan and Carswell (an MEP and an MP respectively) are the driving force behind Direct Democracy , a group set up in the aftermath of the Conservatives' 2005 general election defeat...

The Plan: 12 Months to Renew Britain

Douglas Carswell MP and Daniel Hannan MEP are comrades-in-arms. I had the pleasure of sitting with both in the heady days of the now defunct National Association of Conservative Graduates. Those seeking to discover the existence of a vast right-wing conspiracy ought to turn their attention to the NACG - no wonder CCO merged the Gradudates together with the YCs and Conservative Students..! Carswell...

What? WHAT?!?!?!

What the fuck is going on with the Icelandic banking thingummy? Having only gotten my "facts" from the three-monkeys BBC until now, I was utterly horrified to read this piece by Daniel Hannan: Gordon Brown claims that the expropriation was necessary because Iceland planned to default on British Icesave accounts. How he got this impression is a mystery. Iceland's finance minister made clear in meetings...

In praise of “The Plan”

Douglas Craswell MP and Daniel Hannan MEP have produced an interesting book enttitled “The Plan. Twelve months to renew Britain” I recommend it to anyone who wants to see democracy restored and people empowered in these islands. The Plan includes a proposal for a big repeal Bill, to get governemnt off our backs in [...]

Murkier and murkier- Why use Anti Terror Laws against the financial institutions of a friendly foreign power.

Those of us who really care about the brazen use of the Anti Terror Laws against Icelandic Banks, have had something eating away at us for a logical explanation. MP's have certainly been asking questions , getting no serious answers however. Daniel Hannan is also provoking observations at Browns panic , As the dust settles the same names are starting to be thrown up .

Honour.

a comment by 'runar' on Daniel Hannan's Telegraph blog It is worth reading, it needs a very wide readership. "Hi. I am an Icelander and currently I am studying in Denmark. I could never in my wildest nightmares imagine this situation, which is upon us. It is amazing how things can alter within few weeks. As I left Iceland one year ago everything was fine, I had been working as a fisherman for many...

A Book for the Evening

I'm not feeling very well today, so I won't be posting anymore tonight. What I will be doing though is trying to read more of The Plan: Twelve months to renew Britain* by Daniel Hannan , MEP and Douglas Carswell , MP. Douglas spoke to us about the book at the Young Britons' Foundation Workshop I attended in Birmingham just before the conference started. As I only seem to manage to read a few pages...

The Plan: Twelve Months to Renew Britain

Two young Conservative politicians in the UK, Douglas Carswell and Daniel Hannan have come up with a plan (the “Plan”) for what they call – “renewing Britain”. Daniel Douglas Carswell has been the Conservative MP for Harwich and Clacton since 2005. Hannan, a writer and journalist, is the Conservative Minister for European Parliament (MEP) for South East England since 1999. The plan put forth by Carswell...
