Here’s a seemless Croydon link to the post below. I’ve been reading acouple of fascinating books by JOY THACKER and NELLIE SHAW about the anarchist WHITEWAY COLONY in the Cotswolds. The colonists came out of THE CROYDON BROTHERHOOD CHURCH and Joy Thacker reprints an anarchist ticket for a social evening in Croydon in 1897 which is suprisingly [...]

We haven’t had a singles roundup in quite a while sowe thought we’d attack them all in two parts for you! Come back tomorrow for part 2! The Tunics are an indie band from Croydon that sound an awful lot like arctic monkeys lyrically and vocally a lot like Luke Pritchard from The Kooks, well based [...]

I've just seen that a Conservative councillor in Croydon has quit her cabinet post over links with the IRA in the 70's. A Croydon council spokesman said Councillor Maria Gatland confirmed that she is the author of To Take Arms - My Year with the Provisional IRA. She is now being asked to quit as a councillor altogether. My reaction to this is has it in anyway affected her work as a councillor on this...

It was only a matter of time, but the DUP has decided to attack Sir Reg Empey because an obscure Conservative member of Croydon Council has a shadowy past , including a connection with the IRA. No matter that none of her colleagues had any inkling Maria Gatland had anything to hide, never mind that she immediately resigned her post and has since been suspended from the council’s Conservative group....

Cllr Maria Gatland has been forced to resign as a Conservative Cabinet Member in Croydon Council, because she was in the IRA until 1972 when she became disillusioned, left, and wrote a book. She was later under threat of death. As an Ulsterman, I think she should be treated as a hero, not with “shock” by her [...]

One of the stranger moments of Conservative 'big tent politics', Channel 4 reports on a Croydon Conservative Councillor's secret provisional IRA past as an interpreter for the terrorist group for arms purchases on the continent in the 1970s. Presumably the Conservatives were impressed by her procurement experience. The councillor has since resigned their post as, er, Cabinet member for Children .

Great story in The Times today about Croydon council’s education chief, Maria Gatlan, who had to resign yesterday after she was outted by a member of the Communist Party of Britain, Peter Latham, for being a former member of the Provisional IRA. Gatlan did one year with the Provos and on one occasion accompanied the terror [...]

Yesterday I reported the striking news that a Conservative councillor from Croydon had resigned her cabinet post after admitting she had close ties with the Provisional IRA in the early 1970s. Time has an undated review of Maria Gatland's book, which was written under her maiden name of Maria McGuire: Dave O'Connell, the Provisional I.R.A.'s political-military swing man, took Maria along as interpreter...

What a truly odd time we live in. A Conservative Party councillor in Croydon has been forced to stand down from her post as a representative for children and young people in her area after it emerged she had past links with the Provisional IRA. You may have heard of her. Back in the days when she wore hot pants and was still known as Maria McGuire , Gatland achieved minor fame as something of a Provo...
