High on their list of targets is 45-year-old starter Randy Johnson, who they envision as a left-handed Maddux capable of eating innings and mentoring 20-year-old lefty Clayton Kershaw, and 41-year-old Doug Brocail, who could slide into Park's middle relief role or set up for Jonathan Broxton if 39-year-old closer Takashi Saito doesn't return.

... of the deal. No word on what the Dodgers are offering. The obvious target is their young lefty Clayton Kershaw, but the Dodgers would have to be extremely reluctant to let go of such a promising prospect who is so close to establishing himself in the majors. Although the Cardinals would have been unlikely to compete with the Braves package, they have plenty of young talent to offer...

... Yes, he is still on the Dodgers team. The '09 rotation should look like Schmidt, Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw and Hiroki Kuroda. I think they'll go after a veteran pitcher for their final spot, perhaps a Bartolo Colon or Randy Johnson. Good news is that the bullpen will be staying intact and few teams can claim that, they were a solid group in '08.

The Dodgers, on the other hand, are deep in young talent, but as a division rival of the Padres, they almost certainly would be required to pay a higher price. Don't count on it: Left-hander Clayton Kershaw is all but untouchable, and even righty James McDonald is more valuable to the Dodgers then he was in July, when he was part of the CC Sabathia discussions. The Dodgers can now sign...

... to a shortened rotation, Derek Lowe pitching on short rest, Joe Torre cautiously pulling him for Clayton Kershaw, etc. That cause/effect view might be a bit extreme, but the fact remains that Penny made a selfish decision which may have torched both his market value (irony alert!) and, after a poor reaction to pen duty, his relationship with the team. I'm fairly certain the righty...

Los Angeles rookie Clayton Kershaw, 20 years old with 109 2/3 innings of major-league experience, faces Ryan Howard while trying to protect a one-run lead in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. Howard walks on a 3-2 pitch that seems to capture a chunk of the strike zone. Kershaw gives up a single and a sacrifice and is pulled. A nation mocks Dodger manager Joe's...
