Why Not Lee...

The Mets are said to be in the market for a right handed power bat who can play left field but the market for such a player is extremely dry. However; just recently it was reported that the Astros may look to move Carlos Lee as a cost cutting measure. Houston. All you hear about the Astros is that they're trying to "dump money." They want to move Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde and if they could...

Buzz: Astros will trade Lee and Valverde

According to Nick Cafardo in the Boston Globe, the Astros want to ‘dump money,’ and are willing to trade SS Miguel Tejada, RHP Jose Valverde and OF Carlos Lee, assuming he will waive his no-trade clause. Lee, 32, who will earn $74 million through 2012, hit .314 last season, with 28 HR, 100 RBI and a .368 [...]

Open Wistful Thinking Thread

Remember how worried a lot of us were when the Giants were linked to Carlos Lee ? And remember how, when the Giants didn't sign Lee, how they turned around and signed Barry Zito with the money earmarked for Lee? Damn, how I wished the Giants had signed Carlos Lee. With Lee, the Giants probably would have been forced to fill center field with an in-house option, like, oh, Randy Winn. This...

Then there was the practical results. Tejada played an adequate shortstop, hit .283 with a pedestrian 13 homers and 66 RBIs -- often from the No. 3 spot in the lineup in front of Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee. Outfielder Luke Scott, one of the throw-ins in the deal, hit .257 with 23 homers and 65 RBIs for the Orioles. In addition, the Astros gave up two of their best pitching prospects -- Matt...

Adam Dunn: Defensive Wizard

Adam Dunn, an above-average fielder in 2008? The numbers seem to suggest just that: The 16th and 17th rated left fielders are a surprise as well. Neither Carlos Lee or Adam Dunn are thought of as good fielders, yet they both scored between 3 and 4 runs above average. If this number is correct [...]

Monday: on MetsBlog, In Case You Missed It

Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols won the NL MVP Award: Fine. The Astros will trade Carlos Lee and Jose Valverde: Hmm. Jeremy Affeldt signed a two-year deal with the Giants: Go. The Mets want ‘strikeout pitchers’ in the bullpen: Good. The grass is down in Citi Field: Wow. Francisco Rodriguez said he had a physical, his agent said he didn’t: Ugh, [...]

ChiSox GM is up to something ... but what?

... they are not going to turn into the South Side Marlins.Remember in Dec. 2004 when Williams traded Carlos Lee to the Brewers for Scott Podsednik, Luis Vizcaino and a minor leaguer? That trade, like the Swisher deal, made little sense at first glance. But Williams turned his $8 million savings on Lee into Tadahito Iguchi, A.J. Pierzynski and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez — and the White Sox...

Astros to announce Hawkins deal

The GM meetings were important settings the previous two years for the Astros. At the 2006 GM meetings, owner Drayton McLane and then-GM Tim Purpura visited with outfielder Carlos Lee and his agent to begin negotiations on the biggest contract in franchise history. The Lidge deal highlighted last year’s meetings, bringing Michael Bourn, Geoff Geary and a third-base prospect to the Astros.

JON PAUL MOROSI'S BLOG: Even at baseball meetings, economy is top of mind

... that reality includes the fact that four players – Roy Oswalt, Lance Berkman, Miguel Tejada and Carlos Lee – will account for roughly $60 million in payroll. Jose Valverde, Ty Wigginton and Wandy Rodriguez are set to receive raises in arbitration. Wade would also like to retain free agent pitchers Randy Wolf, Doug Brocail and LaTroy Hawkins. Valverde, a 29-year-old closer, is one year away...

The hobgoblin of small minds

Richard Justice, today: Hopefully, Draton McLane understands this by now. The amount of his spending isn't an issue. It's his priorities. He wants an immediate return, and it simply doesn't work that way. So he'll throw $100 million at Carlos Lee, but veto the signing of a $900,000 draft pick to save money. Last summer, the Astros signed all but one of their high draft picks. If they made good...
