Attendance will be lowest in history of Camden Yards

Turnout There was a staggering economy and surging gas prices. There was a new baseball stadium that opened about 45 minutes south and a schedule that included just three total weekend series with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. There was also an Orioles team that suffered through an 11th straight losing season and finished in last place for the first time in 20 years.

ESPN Loves Camden Yards

Jim Caple — of ESPN fame — recently wrote an article on ESPN’s Page Two about the top 100 sports venues in the nation. Yankee Stadium was number one; however who was number two? Baltimore’s Camden Yards. Because it started the entire retro-stadium craze and the tsunami of taxpayer-funded facilities that dramatically changed revenues and altered the [...]

Stadium Review: Camden Yards

It's a good thing that there is a Camden Yards because there's not that much to do in Baltimore. The city has a sleepiness to it while at the same time forcing itself to try and be touristy. Camden certainly stands out in the city as a place with more natural vibrancy. We stayed in the same hotel as the Baltimore Ravens, who were playing a game the next day, so every elevator...

50 millionth fan at Camden Yards: Bugs&Cranks lays the odds

Either tonight or tomorrow, the Orioles will welcome the 50 millionth fan to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The downtown ballpark, which has served as the industry standard for urban sporting venues, has reached the 50-million-fan mark faster than any stadium in baseball history. To celebrate, the team will send some lucky ticket holder home with [...]

The Schmuck Stops Here: Oriole Economics 101

... own. Total attendance dropped below two million this year for the first time in the history of Camden Yards and viewership of the team's regional sports network has been disappointing. This might be the ultimate case of needing to spend money to make money, but it's going to be hard to project revenues going forward because of the effect the greater economic crisis might have on the...

Geppi museum facing rent troubles

... at all out of protest. But he did say the rent became an issue when the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards, the tenant in Camden Station below Geppi’s, had its rent payments reduced in June 2007 because the nonprofit was struggling to make ends meet due to unexpectedly low admissions revenue. At that time, the stadium authority voted to forgive the museum its $444,274 in...

Award brings Huff some redemption

Ten months after using an expletive on a national radio show to describe Baltimore, and six months removed from being booed lustily on Opening Day at Camden Yards, Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff completed a bizarre but highly successful season by being named the 2008 Most Valuable Oriole yesterday.

News from around the globe

§ Steve Geppi’s Entertainment Museum is definitely worth a trip, but it has had a history of economic setbacks. Now there’s a rent dispute of some kind, instigated when the non-profit Sports Legends Museum, which is housed in the same building, got a reduced rent. Geppi’s museum is for profit, although those have been slow in coming with attendance at next-door Camden Yards down due to...
