I have been asked if I know who owns the original of this sketch of Hilaire Belloc by Eril Gill. I'm afraid I don't. Does anybody else?

... are difficult to follow during a late night reading. So my friend took a break to try out some Belloc, and wrote me his impression today: I am now finishing up How the Reformation Happened . Belloc’s writing appeals to me more than Chesterton (at this point). I like the framework of “yes, I wrote that, I meant to, and here’s why it’s true. Idiot [implied].” I also enjoy paragraphs....

...are so much a part of life that it seems impossible to imagine a Britain without them. But start imagining now. A report in today's Daily Telegraph notes that some three dozen pubs in our country are closing every week. This is ghastly. The Telegraph quotes - and rightly - Hilaire Belloc: "When you have lost your inns, you may drown your empty selves, for you will have lost the heart of England."...

We used to have people like Chesterton and Belloc coming here when they were in Brighton, Lord Alfred Douglass was a parishioner here in his old age. Today we had Amy Welborn the American Catholic writer and commentator, in transit from the USA to see family in Rome. I hope she caught her connecting flight.

The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1926) written by Eliot Stannard , based on the novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes Now I really wish The Mountain Eagle could be found so I could see the transition between The Pleasure Garden and this film. Reading the description in The Alfred Hitchcock Story , it sounds like TME was more in TPG 's vein than The Lodger -- melodrama, romance gone bad, etc. --...

The modern-day road safety 'Cautionary Tales' - to be screened in TV adverts - take a leaf out of the verses of Hilaire Belloc who coined such classic but often gruesome children's poems as 'Matilda, Who told lies, and was burned to death', 'Jim, who ran away from his nurse, and was eaten by a lion', 'Henry King, who chewed bits of string and was cut off in dreadful agonies,' and even 'Hildebrand,...

Monday, November 03, 2008On the EveA long view. It looks like we are headed to a big Democratic victory tomorrow. If so, the following may give a little cynical perspective - it is Hillaire Belloc's assessment of the epic Liberal victory in the British elections of 1906:The accursed power which stands on Privilege(And goes with Women, and Champagne, and Bridge) Broke -and Democracy resumed her...

... best plumbing technology available (GK was no Luddite). In The Restoration of Property , Hilaire Belloc says that you have been snookered by the Republican corporate culture for no less than seven reasons. Big monopolies and bigger concerns have an unjust -- and truly unChristian -- advantage over you because their proportional cost of operation is cheaper than yours; they are better able...
