Only men could compete in the first few years of the Us Open championship. And the competition was only in singles. The tournament was first held in August 1881. It was held at the New Port Casino, Newport, Rhode Island. U.S. National Lawn Tennis Associations were only allowed to enter and participate in the tournament at that time. The US Open championship for women’s singles was first held in 1887....
