More iron than carbon

by Erik Blachford As a former middle of the pack Ironman triathlete, I have to say I’m somewhat in awe of the professionals who hammer through the race in a little over 8 hours. When they race the world championship in Kona, Hawaii, these folks dive in for 2.4 miles of ocean swimming, ride for 112 miles in brutal headwinds and volcanic heat, then cap it off with a standard 26.2 marathon through lava...

Olympic withdrawal...

Would you rather be a member of a world championship sports team or be the champion of an individual sport? Which sport would you choose? My answer? I'll come to that in a minute. I have played my fair share of sports in my lifetime. I was on the swimming team since forever but quit because I thought I was too 'cool' for it. Then I joined the basketball team, the soccer team, the softball team. I just...

A couple of recent quotes I enjoyed.

Dara Torres: "Two years ago, the Torres’ Olympic itch returned when, soon after giving birth to her daughter Tessa, she discovered she was swimming fast. At the 2006 Masters World Championships in California, Torres was breastfeeding between events, but still...

Brian Cazeneuve: Legendary Torres defies odds, age

Let's start by dispelling some rumors about Dara Torres. She hasn't been talking to the Chinese gymnastics team about age manipulation. She didn't jam the info computers in Beijing with page 457 of her swim résumé. She hasn't reserved a place to jump into the 2047 World Championships to celebrate her 80th birthday when her grandkids could be coaching her.

Tunisian Ousamma Mellouli swims in Olympics after 18 month ban for Adderall

Tunisian swimmer Ousamma Mellouli will compete for medal as he swims in the 2008 Olympics, even though he tested positive for amphetamines in 2006. Mellouli used Adderall before a world championship meet. The Court of Arbitration for Sport bought his excuse of using Adderall to complete a paper at USC, two days before the meet. Interesting, that academic cheating only earns an 18 month suspension....

The Olympics: 10 U.S. Athletes To Watch

Michael Phelps, Swimming After winning six gold medals in the 2004 Athens Games and seven at last year's World Championships in Australia, there's talk of Phelps taking home eight golds from Beijing. If Phelps can pull that that off with his 6-foot-7 wingspan and size 14 feet, he could overshadow any athlete and any story line from these games. With two previous Olympics under his belt and a space-age...
