Joe Scanlon's Thoughts on Carleton Ravens

Thanks to Joe for providing us with this look at Carleton. Now that I have seen the Carleton men play nine times – starting with Towson finishing with the Brock game this past weekend (I missed the St. John’s game in Ottawa) -- I am starting to go to each game wondering which team will show up. Against Fraser Valley, for example, the Ravens struggled for most of the game. Against Guelph,...

British NHS lauds Wii Fit Plus for flabby bum-busting potential

You know, we've been pretty skeptical about the whole "fit" part of the "Wii Fit" phenomenon, and for good reason: as studies have shown, the health benefits of gaming, whether you're sitting, standing, or faux-bowling, are minimal at best . Still, for a number of consumers at home and abroad, the game conjures up notions of leading an active lifestyle. So perhaps it is no surprise,...

NEWS: NHS gives Wii Fit stamp of approval

Gets Change4Life logo on packaging It's official, video games are good for you. The NHS says so. Well, one videogame, anyway. The NHS is said to be giving the Nintendo Wii Fit Plus the NHS's Change4Life logo making the Wii the first gaming device to ever be recommended by the health department. NHS endorses Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus

Nintendo has won permission to run the NHS's Change4Life logo on its marketing for the forthcoming Wii Fit Plus, the first time a games company has been endorsed by the UK government's Department of Health. It's a huge and positive step forward for the games industry and the wider appreciation of the positive aspects of gaming amongst non-gamers. Wii Fit unquestionably improves a user's general health,...

Editorial from this morning's Ottawa Citizen

Eastern Ontario's team There is much to like about the Carleton University Ravens men's basketball team. Six of the last seven Canadian Interuniversity Sports national championships come immediately to mind. But there is more to it than that. There is the sportsmanship that the team shows in its wins and rare losses. And there is also the pedigree of the players. If you look down the Ravens roster,...

Carleton routs Towson

If Tuesday night is any indication, 6'5" third year swing man Cole Hobin appears to be finally fulfilling the promise that his potential brought after a solid high school career in Ottawa plus one season at Eastern Commerce Prep in Toronto. Hobin, who had an uneven first two seasons while adjusting to the pace of practice and intricacies of game execution at Carleton, has been touted by many close...

Heaven helps those who kelp themselves

Before Rob Saunders founded Island Scallops Limited and began growing some of the world's biggest, healthiest - and some would say best-tasting - scallops, he was interested in seaweed. For years he studied bull kelp, thinking that if you could grow forests of it, you might have a valuable crop. But the economics just weren't there for a viable kelp farm, so he began fooling around with shellfish, and...

Rob Saunders Strikes Desert Gold

Desert Gold is the music video directing debut of puppeteer Rob Saunders. Rob Saunders (see previous post ) has directed his first music video, Desert Gold , for the Norwegian band Maika . I love the rod puppetry in it; the puppets look very simple, but they've been staged and shot with some real cinematic flare that's difficult to achieve. A talented crew of L.A.-based puppet people helped out with...
