O’Driscoll led his country to Six Nations glory earlier this year, but Ireland have Paul O’Connell among their leaders in the squad. Coach Declan Kidney said they hadn’t made any long term plans, but injury-permitting, O’Driscoll will [...]

EARLY last season, Brian O'Driscoll wasn't playing too well. Short on the searing acceleration that petrified defences for much of the decade, and also strangely short on confidence, the hot topic was whether or not he'd retain the Ireland captaincy that at one stage had seemed like a sinecure. Amid intense speculation that Paul O'Connell might get the vote, the new coach, Declan Kidney, decided to...

HEINEKEN CUP POOL ONE NORTHAMPTON v MUNSTER: PAUL O’CONNELL could surely have done without this. Coming so soon after the heightened focus on his leadership on the Lions tour, seasonal starts are supposed to be gentler than this. Instead, another defeat – coming on the heels of last week – would spark talk of a crisis and perhaps even prompt doubts within.

A SLOW burner of a season goes up a few gears this week with the latest instalment in the Leinster-Munster rivalry. With Brian O’Driscoll’s return to arms having been confirmed yesterday, and Paul O’Connell set to follow when Munster announce their squad today, both coaches have pretty much a full hand to play with.
