• Manager admits England were not as slick as Wallabies • 'I think the pace and intensity of the Test told' Martin Johnson is not a verbose man at the best of times, and yesterday was definitely not the best of times. Faced with the task of explaining another defeat , and another lacklustre performance from his team, Johnson fell back on some familiar phrases. But then England's were familiar...

Australia came from behind to stun England and kick off their autumn campaign in style at Twickenham. Tries from Will Genia and Adam Ashley-Cooper helped Australia to victory, while Jonny Wilkinson scored all of England's points on his return.

England 9-18 Australia England slipped to a fourth successive autumn international defeat as Australia staged a convincing second-half comeback. The men in white, with Jonny Wilkinson back in the side, never looked like scoring a try and team manager Martin Johnson endured his seventh defeat in 12 matches in charge. England had more shape and were better organised than they were a year ago, but injuries...

There is a long list of troubling tasks facing Martin Johnson and his cohort of England coaches this morning. So low did the sweet chariot swing yesterday that the metronomic swipe of Jonny Wilkinson's boot was drowned out by chimes of doom among a Twickenham crowd who cheered their returning hero whenever they could but were not so sycophantic as to ignore the discordant rugby unfolding in front...

Martin Johnson's hand may have been forced when he inked his back line to face Australia in the Autumn International series opener, with Delon Armitage and Riki Flutey ruled out through injury, but the new-look midfield partnership of Shane Geraghty and Dan Hipkiss in particular, failed to ignite England as they crumbled to a woeful 18-9 defeat at Twickenham yesterday.

Much to my disappointment, the scrummage did not quite develop into the headline-grabbing, tone-setting confrontation I had hoped for yesterday at Twickenham. Inevitably there was the odd penalty either way, but not the violent, passionate, 2005-esque flare-up we all so desired.

A largely disciplined performance by England still ended in defeat. So where did they go wrong? 1 Discipline A vast improvement on last season with only six penalties conceded. Australia gave away the first seven infringements of the match as they came under particular pressure at the breakdown from Lewis Moody and David Wilson. Moody may not have been involved last season, but he is known for a penalty-costing...

Kiwi playmaker puts in a sublime performance to maintain the status quo against Wales In the final five minutes of a game that had never really veered off the well-worn path of the past 56 years, two things happened to take it to the brink of an upset. Until this double trouble, the All Blacks were in firm control, as they had been since half-time, having swapped their kicking game for an up-tempo...

Wales 12-19 New Zealand Well, it was brave. But then it usually is. Same result, though. Fifty-six years will become 57. But there was wildness and excitement in the endgame. Having looked as if they might be broken men as they stared at a 19-6 deficit with quarter of an hour to go and the All Blacks swarming on their line, Wales roused themselves somehow for one last push. And then, after two Stephen...
