Ted Lilly underwent successful surgery on his left shoulder yesterday. He won’t begin throwing until early March, which means he won’t be ready to go when the season begins. The Cubs are hopeful he’ll be ready to pitch sometime in April, but considering it was surgery on the shoulder I think that’s wishful thinking. Setbacks are common after surgery and Lilly isn’t likely...

I handled the McGwire story seriously here , so now let's have some fun with it: [ scene: Cardinals-Cubs game, summer 2010. Yadier Molina just struck out on four pitches and goes to talk to the hitting coach ] Molina : Hey Mac, Zambrano got me with the changeup last time. So I was looking changeup, and he busted me with the fastball. Did it look like I was cheating changeup? McGwire : I'm not here...

by Gregory Smith - AP Will Ricky Nolasco be undervalued in 2010? View full size photo uploaded October 21, 2009 I know what you are asking-what the heck is FIP? According to The Hardball Times site, FIP is Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually...

With the focus on 2010 and the sale of the team likely three weeks away from closing, there’s a lot of discussion on what’s going to happen to Rich Harden and will the Cubs offer him arbitration. The Cub Reporter goes so far as to suggest that this decision could affect Jim Hendry’s hold on the Cubs general manager job (see: Arbitration is Going to be the End of Jim Hendry ). First...

Just a reminder, it's important. A significant amount of a pitcher's value is tied to his ability to hit, which we have a pretty good idea how to measure. Yet for some reason we leave hitting production out of our pitcher valuations. So I'll add StatCorner's pitching runs above average, hitting runs above average using a wOBA around .180 as average, and I might as well include the +/- fielding runs...

"Baseball Tonight" anchor Karl Ravech is even picking the Cardinals to sweep. The lone dissenter is Eric Neel who is picking the Dodgers in five. I don't get it. Starting Wednesday a new season will begin. What happened in the regular season is...
