Sunday's Paris-Tours, the 103rd edition of the "Sprinters' Classic," features the final battle of the season by the world's two best sprinters not connected to the Isle of Man. Actually, the race features pretty much every top sprinter currently on form: William Bonnet, Romain Feillu, Koldo Fernandez, Yahueni Hutarovich, Tom Boonen, Allan Davis, Oscar Freire, Greg Van Avermaet, Danilo Napolitano,...
Italy's Michele Merlo, 25, captured what might be team Barloworld's last win in the Tour of Britain. He out-sprinted Spaniard Koldo Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi) in yesterday's final stage in London. "I'm so proud with Michele and I'd like to thank all the riders for their commitment and team-work," team manager Claudio Corti said. "Today's win could be the last one of the season...
Michele Merlo of Italy won the final stage of the Tour of Britain in London, as Edvald Boasson Hagen retained the leader's yellow jersey. The 22-year-old Norwegian was well down the field, in 39th, but in claiming four stages in succession had done more than enough to be crowned winner. Next year he will be part of Team Sky, the new British squad, and it was a future colleague, Geraint Thomas, who...
Evald Boasson Hagen secured his overall victory in the Tour of Britain Saturday, safely finishing in the peloton at the end of the final stage in London. Barloworld's Michele Merlo win the final field sprint of the race, followed by Koldo Fernandez (Euskatel Euskadi) and Chris Sutton (Garmin-Slipstream). Sutton, who won one stage of the race, finished second overall, 23 seconds behind Boasson Hagen,...
Continuing a streak of late-season form, Garmin's Tyler Farrar took another sprintvictory winning the first stage of the Eneco Tour. In the absence of his season archenemy Mark Cavendish he comfortably outsprinted Tom Boonen and Edvald Boasson Hagen to take the stage and the leaders-jersey. Behind him a bad crash ruined the day for a large part of the field. Final kilometer (with crash) video from...
What a week it’s been for Euskaltel-Euskadi. First, its captain and Tour de France stage-winner, Mikel Astrarloza, pops positive for EPO in a pre-Tour doping control, some nasty business that raises questions about the team’s future, not to mention its ethical integrity. Then Igor Antón wins Sunday’s Urkiola climbing race in the heart of Basque Country to remind everyone that...
Apologies if I'm stepping on anyone's toes, but I was out riding and had the thought that I'd like to do a regularly updated feature about the race for the Green Jersey. Chris did a great preview here , and I see Ursula did another good post specifically dealing with how to beat Cav here . A lot of stuff from today's stage is already covered there. But there was more that happed today than just Cav,...

The Tour of Spain leader Daniele Bennati avoided a late crash to win the fourth stage from Cordoba to Puertollano yesterday. The Italian Liquigas rider finished more than a bike length clear of the Belgian Tom Boonen, with the Spaniard Koldo Fernandez de Larrea third. Bennati remains overall leader with Boonen second at 22 seconds and Alejandro Valverde of Spain in third at 48 seconds.
Here's the results of Euskal Bizikleta's second stage, won by our very own super-sprinter Koldo Fernández: 1st, Koldo Fernández, 0:00 12th, Igor Antón, s.t. 48th, Egoi Martínez, s.t. 56th, Jorge Azanza, s.t. 67th, Amets Txurruka, s.t. 87th, Aitor Hernández, 8:21 93rd, Andoni Lafuente, 14:30 GC with one stage to go: 4th, Igor Antón, 0:00 47th, Amets Txurruka,...
I think I have been drinking the koolaid over at slipstreamsports.com, but I just have a really good feeling about Tyler Farrar in today's sprinters' stage. JJ Haedo or Koldo Fernandez or Francisco Jose Ventoso may have something more to say about it. Anyway, it's a nice transition before tomorrow's decisive route. Not sure what the video link is, but CyclingFans.com will take care of that.
Team Unibrow will, for the first time this year, be out in full force: Boonen, Gilbert, Florencio, Ricco (probable scratch), Koldo Fernandez (yay!), Haussler, Hammond, Napolitano, Patxi Vila, Quinziato, Kroon, and Loddo. That's one dirty dozen. Granted, I picked DiLuca to win, but there are lots of points for close calls too. Remember the scoring: Final Results (top 20): 350-300-275-250-225; 200-175-150-125-100;...
