Egoi Martinez has had admirable results in previous years at the Vuelta a España, finishing 12th overall in 2006 while racing for the Discovery Channel team followed in 2008 by a ninth place general classification for his present Euskaltel-Euskadi squad. Martinez also won a stage and collected the best climber's jersey at the 2006 Vuelta and led the Spanish Grand Tour for four days in 2008....

Most people, including myself, expected stage 19 of the Tour de France to be won by a breakaway or by an attack from one of the leading climbers, but that was not to be.
