Damiano Cunego will not take the start in next week's Olympic road race. Together with Franco Ballerini, director of the Azurri, he took the decision after Saturday's Clasica San Sebastien. Cunego is still troubled by his injuries from his crash at the Tour de France. He had "negative sensations" during the race, including difficulty breathing and a nagging headache. No word yet on who will replace...

It was sweet to see the teammates of the injured Damiano Cunego ride the only team time trial in this Tour and bring him home inside the time limits in a pink and blue Italian armada: 146. The other day I was all poised to praise Riccardo Ricco, whose two stage wins in this year's Tour were thrilling pieces of cycling. I was going to suggest that if Damiano Cunego could show some better form there might be some hope that we could enjoy a modern rivalry that might offer a pale echo of the great Coppi-Bartali tussles of the past. Not so fast, my friends. Ricco has been kicked out of the...

The bad: Kim Kirchen - Fun while it lasted. Damiano Cunego - Not quite there today. Alejandro Valverde - Who ever said you were a grand tour contender anyway? Andy Schleck - No GC for you. The good: Frank Schleck - Took advantage of the hard working CSC squad today to haul himself up a few spots in GC. Juan Jose Cobo [...]

Today's stage was largely about three of the biggest names in Cycling: Kim Kirchen, Alejandro Valverde, and Damiano Cunego. We all know what happened to them, and with the possible exception of Kirchen I think we know who these guys are. Ranked #10 in the world at CyclingQuotient , Kirchen is the Champion of Fleche Wallonne, the mid-week Ardennes classic with the huge finishing climb. Kirchen excels...

Cunego sets his Tour hopes on the Alps As.com in Spain reports today that Damiano Cunego sees Cadel Evans as his chief rival and the principal favorite to win the Tour de France. Next on his list of foes is Alejandro Valverde. "Evans is the favorite because he's already placed second last year and has been very consistent in 2008. Valverde is not far behind, so they're both my main rivals." He says...

Last in a mindlessly repetitive series... And revised in order of preference. Damiano Cunego Rating: ★★★★★ Sky's the limit for the Kid. He gassed himself too early on the Mur de Huy, but with better tactics, Liège is his to lose. Cadel Evans Rating: ★★★★★ Looked completely fab Wednesday. But the less steep finale in Ans tilts the race a bit more to the fast finishers. No way, though, does he get dropped...

Here is what the mini-fracas over "missed" doping controls at the Lampre camp boil down to : Riders were not where they were expected to be at the time the controllers arrived. They were 10km away, coming back from dinner with some lucky Damiano Cunego fans. Testing was scheduled for sometime between 11pm and 3am; by that, I gather riders were expected to be found in their rooms at that time [not that...
