There was a very interesting piece from David Hopps in The Guardian , who suggested that the annointment of Alastair Cook as 'captain in waiting' was happening seemingly without challenge. It is certainly true that since reports surfaced that Andrew Strauss may sit out the tour of Bangladesh, there have been no other candidates put forward (apart from Jimmy Anderson ) than Cook. Hopps makes a very...

Congratulations to 19 year-old James Taylor, voted the 2009 Young Cricketer of the Year (YCY) by the Cricket Writers' Club. Aged just 19, the Leicestershire middle-order batsman has shone in a fankly mediocre side this summer, breaking various records along the way. He became the county's youngest player to score 1000 Championship runs in a season, to score a double-century (207 not out) and to hit...

Mike Atherton mentioned on The Times Ashes podcast that there is no better player than one who is not in the side, and this certainly rings true with Mark Ramprakash. His recall would have been a romantic notion, but was surely never going to be seriously considered. Whilst Trott is the obvious (and best) option once Bopara's position became untenable, it does highlight the lack of genuine options...

• England captain taunts Australia ahead of third Test • Ricky Ponting responds that England never had an aura Andrew Strauss has gone on the offensive ahead of tomorrow's third Test at Edgbaston, claiming Australia have lost their "aura" as England seek to move into a 2-0 lead for the first time in an Ashes series for 23 years. Ricky Ponting hit back by reminding England of their...

It's been an interesting experience so far following the fortunes of the England cricket team from deep in enemy territory. On the one hand, I will get to see far more of this Ashes series than I would have done had I been in the UK, as the time difference turns something that would otherwise have happened while I was at work into prime evening viewing--the 11AM start for the first test translates...

I suppose the western prejudiced would agree with this by default. Coaching India and Pakistan is fraught with difficulty, and Mike Atherton goes into more depth about the “impossible” job that has faced Richard Pybus, Bob Woolmer and others. Pybus could not cope with the irrationality and the uncertainty of Pakistan cricket. Using an unfortunate analogy, [...]

It is all so easy when you are an armchair pundit, and we bloggers are no different. With politics or economics, so with sport. Mike Atherton, the former captain of England's cricket team and a man notable for his dogged, never-say-die style of batting, is unimpressed by the England's cricket selectors' choice of skipper, who was born in South Africa, could not get a regular place in that country's...
