I am taking organic chemistry and I was wondering what is the best way to extract alkaloids from plants such as yohimbe, ephedra, coffee beans, passion flowers and others as well. Any help would be great. So far I just put powdered coffee beans into Isopropanol and shook it vigorously, but I’m not sure what to [...] Post from: Buy Coffee Beans, Brew Coffee Fresh

As most of my blog readers know, from the age of 10(ish) to 21, my life's dream was to be a doctor. I was pre-med in college and took all the required classes, including the dreaded organic chemistry which forever ruined my 4.0 GPA (and for which I will forever be bitter). I ended up in law school and am happy with the decision, but I remain fascinated by all things medical. My newest case involves...

This post was long on my mind - after spending days searching the internet for ways to store food in any other containers besides plastic. It seems nuts to go through the effort of growing or buying locally grown fabulous produce and then package it in such unhealthy containers as plastic - be it bags or trays or jugs. I never though about it before, but now it dawned on me that time is ripe for change....

The short answer is yes. One of the most difficult processes an undergraduate student can undergo is the application experience for medical school education. Mr. Wyatt, age 6, is a pretty sharp tack. I taught him the basics of algebra a few weekends ago: I drew a see-saw, asked him “if I was on one side and you were on the other, would it balance?” “No!”. “If two kids both weighed the same were on each end, would [...]

Lately I'd like to know just when it was that I stopped believing anything was possible and started telling myself I wasn't good at stuff. What if I hadn't listened to myself at that point? My mind is working differently these days. There's an energy now, something that tells me I can understand way more than I thought I ever could. I am reading books and essays that would have passed way over my head...

With the classroom notes in hand, and the test prep questions printed out, the preparation for the looming exam is well under way. Unlike other classes in prep for med school, this one is different. There are no exhaustive equations to manipulate whilst punching random numbers and variables into a NON-graphing calculator (you did get that, right? non-graphing because obviously if we can program the...

Today I did not give a gift to anyone. In fact, I didn’t get further than my porch all day long. It was actually a struggle. As I planned for this 29-Day Giving Challenge, I thought, “I don’t want to do that thing where I say, ‘my gift to myself is relaxing.’” It somehow felt like cheating. Besides, I’ve been making a point to stretch myself with each of these...
