Anyone reading contemporary Seduction literature would undoubtedly come to the conclusion that there is only one way to find a lover; and that is to become the most dominant person on the planet. This is clearly nonsense, but enough people seem to believe that because this is vaguely similar to how monkey mating systems operate, it [...]

In 1991 there were 30 young people beginning graduate school in the Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Progam at Yale University. Where are they now? How many have tenure at a university? The answer might surprise you. Read about the fate of these students in this week's issue of Science [And Then There Was One]. Looking at my own department, there are about 10 Ph.D.'s from a similar cohort

The second time I took it, it was team taught by two professors at a large state university. He was a good teacher, and she was not. One day she was scheduled to teach, but he showed up. The class of about 100 undergrads burst into applause and cheering when they realized he was going to teach and not her. A few class periods when she showed up, the groans and moans were hardly subtle. As a grad student,...

"Bastion of ignorance"? "Right-wing political ideology"? "Pseudo-scientific claptrap"? Not exactly the sorts of taunts you expect from a purportedly calm, collected, objective scientific source like the president of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). Undoubtedly, such over-the-top rhetoric brings coos of approval from ID's most vehement critics, such as those at the...

After 3 lectures in biochemistry, I have fallen asleep, followed along avidly, and been bored nearly to sleep in that order. I've realized my deal with chemistries is that imagining bonds and structures and blahdy blah blah bores me to tears whereas the one lecture that actually covered more of chemistry in actual use kept me awake. Here's to hoping that there will be less theoretical blahdy blah blah....

For many years the answer to this question seemd obvious. As described by Fritz Lipmann, ATP has "high energy" bonds. When these bonds are cleaved by hydrolysis a large amount of free energy is released and this energy can be captured and used to perform useful work. By the mid-1960s this concept was being challenged by biochemists with a deeper appreciation of thermodynamics and chemistry. For

Albert Lehninger (1917 - 1986) was a biochemist whose main research interest was the production of energy by mitochondria. His second book, Bioenergetics was published by W.A. Benjamin Inc. in 1965 as part of a series of biochemistry books by well-known scientists. One of the other books in the series was Molecular Biology of the Gene by James D. Watson. In honor of all those students who are returning to college this week's molecule is another simple one that should be familiar to every undergraduate taking an introductory biochemistry course. Your task is to identify the molecule and give me its correct common name—the one required on an exam—and the complete, correct IUPAC name. There's a direct connection between today's molecule and a

Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Shazia, 30, was part of the first generation of American born children in her family. From a very young age her father pushed her to become a doctor, but after her first semester at The University of Texas at Austin studying Biochemistry, Shazia realized she was more passionate about redesigning her bedroom than anything that was going on in the classroom. Upon graduation,...
