Born poor in Maine in 1840, Pingree fought in many brutal battles in the Civil War and was captured and held at Andersonville, the notorious Georgia prison where thousands of Union soldiers died of starvation and neglect. He escaped to fight more battles and was at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia in 1865 when Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered.
