The underlying numbers suggest something less. Gains at AIG were in part a result of "write-ups" of asset values at the company. Some of this could be the result of less stringent accounting rules. Congress urged so-called "mark-to-market" rules be eased earlier this year, a move that has benefited many U.S. financial firms.
