Janis Joplin

This is an American celebration. That it was short lived, like a July 4th fireworks, is meaningless. It was a cosmic explosion. A transcendental experience. More than any Springsteen concoction, Joplin was born in the US of A. Port Arthur, Texas to be exact, daughter of a Texaco man, child of Thomas Jefferson High and Christ Church. Out of this red, white and blue soil came a weird outsider,...

Amsterdam: More Cowbell at the Melkweg

Here's a night shot I took at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, summer 1983. This cultural center opened in 1970 and is still going strong in 2009. Back in '83, I saw plenty of live music and a Janis Joplin film, packed with people. Sort of like an elaborate version of the Majestic Complex (including the Magic Stick) in Detroit, it's located not far from the International Youth Hostel at Lijnbaansgracht...

Newspaper Days restocked at Hastings after it sells out

Now that I have chastised the local media for running the usual Christmas shopping stories I will hypocritically provide one of my own: When I stopped by Hastings in joplin about an hour ago, I discovered all copies of my new book, Newspaper Days , had sold out (I checked, no one had hidden them; they were actually purchased). I supplied some more, so the book should be back on the shelves by...

... Jesus and is proof that "he's listening." [ link ] First of all, the image is of Janis Joplin, not Jesus. Second, when the Lord God Almighty reveals himself once again to us the unworthy here on earth, it ain't going to be on the underside of an iron. It will be like this: So clean the iron and put it away. You embarrass us.

After that, Atlantic signed her to a solo deal, and she spent a year preparing the album that became Queen of the Night ,...

[Decade Cincinnati] – Heartless Bastards – Stairs And Elevators

... out of a Northside garage emerged a voice. Sounding like a mixture of Robert Plant and Janis Joplin, Erika Wennerstrom brought the Heartless Bastards to the forefront of the Cincinnati music scene with her vocal chords. It really didn’t matter what kind of music was behind her, Wennerstrom and her pipes would have eventually surfaced from the crowded Midwest music scene at some point. Of...
